Lab Manager
Purpose of the Position
This position is responsible for managing a 2000 square foot R&D lab and a shared prototyping lab, both of which are used for evaluation and development of new Thorlabs products. Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.
Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:
• Maintain mechanical, electrical, and optical equipment.
• Train users of shared equipment.
• Manage shared access of the space and equipment.
• Coordinate necessary activity with the facilities department.
• Contribute to budget proposals for new equipment.
• Assist with product verification testing for the new product introduction (NPI) process.
• Review and provide input on design guidelines and requirements for new products.
In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:
• Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
• Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.
The Company retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.
Physical Activities: This is largely a sedentary role; however, it may require the ability to lift, bend or stand as necessary. The employee may occasionally lift or move objects up to 25 pounds.
Requirements
Experience:
Specialized Knowledge and Skills
- Minimum 4 years of experience using the following equipment:
- Lasers (free-space, fiber, or semiconductor),
- Photodetectors (semiconductor or thermal),
- Electronic test equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, DC power supplies, high-voltage power supplies, etc.),
- Thermal management devices (thermoelectric coolers, thermistors, liquid chillers),
- Optics (lenses, mirrors, gratings, prisms, etc.),
- Optomechanics (kinematic optical mounts, translation stages, rotation stages)
• Knowledge in C/C++, Java, MATLAB, or Python.
• Optomechanical or optoelectronic design experience, particularly of end user products.
• Knowledge in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or CREO.
• Strong organizational, communication and planning skills.
Education: • Bachelor’s degree or higher in any scientific or engineering discipline.
Direct Reports: This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
