JOB DESCRIPTION (AY 2024 - 2025)
UCSB Career Services is excited to announce current recruitment for TWO Graduate Career Peer Advisor positions, to begin employment in Summer/Fall 2024 and run through Spring quarter 2025, with the potential for continued employment through the 2025-2026 year.
This position will work with the Assistant Director of Graduate Career Services, Maya Hargens, to help graduate students specifically on issues related to career development. This position will give you valuable experience working in higher-ed administration and the opportunity to assist with program development and promotion as well as hone in on your workshop development, presentation and group facilitation skills. This position is hybrid, with remote and on-campus needs that are primarily based at the Graduate Student Resource Center (Student Resource Building, Room 1215). The Graduate Career Peer reports to the Assistant Director of Graduate Career Services under the Career Services Department and works closely with Staff and peers at the GSRC.
BENEFITS
PAYMENT: $23.00 per hour (paid by Career Services)
DAYS/HOURS: 12 hours weekly (35% appointment) during the entire academic year (Fall-Spring Quarter), to be scheduled with Assistant Director. Summer 2024 hours available. No responsibilities during academic breaks and holidays.
LOCATION: Graduate Career Peers will be able to work a hybrid schedule. In-office hours will be conducted from the Graduate Student Resource Center (GSRC) in the SRB, as well as occasional hours at Career Services and Career Fair locations.
SUPPORT FROM GRADUATE DIVISION: The Graduate Division will pay partial fees and graduate student health insurance (Gaucho Health Insurance) equivalent to those provided for TAs if other student academic appointments or awards do not provide these fees.
ADDITIONAL EMPLOYMENT DETAILS: With the appropriate eligibility and approval, the position may be combined with a GSR or TA position, as long as the combined hours do not exceed 75% appointment.
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with developing new content and editing promotional events/activities/career opportunities for graduate students on UCSB’s GradPost and publicizing events sponsored by Career Services and Grad Div (e.g., marketing campaigns like This Week @ Career emails, in-person promotion); Skills needed: strong editing and writing skills, content promotion skills, familiarity or interest with basic graphic design
- Offer direct coaching and mentoring support to graduate students by holding weekly office hours for student appointments, respond and advise student requests by email, Zoom, or in-person, critique student resumes, CVs, and cover letters, and provide confidential support and make referrals as needed. Skills needed: positive attitude, desire to directly support graduate students, mentoring/advising skills.
- Host graduate student workshops (e.g., LinkedIn, resume/cover letter) by editing, enhancing, creating new content and presenting workshops. Skills needed: strong presentation skills; friendly and open interpersonal skills
- Support efforts to create targeted programming for graduate students and assist with logistical aspects of program development (e.g., help with grad student career mixer, organize panel discussions). Aid in developing relationships and outreach to different graduate programs and department, and employers to provide information, resources, and outreach to graduate students; Skills needed: strong organizational skills, collaborative skills, initiative skills
- Work effectively and collaboratively with other peer advisors and staff in the Graduate Student Resource Center, Career Services, Graduate Division, and Student Affairs; Skills needed: communication skills, collaboration skills, professionalism
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Has completed one year of graduate study at UCSB, is in good academic standing, is within university time-to-degree standards, and meets all other standard student employment eligibility requirements;
- Is energetic and knowledgeable about the UCSB campus;
- Has a positive and self-motivated attitude, and is able to work well independently or collaboratively;
- Has a keen eye for detail, is organized, and meticulous about checking email
- Can represent graduate student interests and concerns and is attentive to the goals of excellence in UCSB’s graduate education;
- Has experience with or demonstrated ability to advise, mentor, and support students in Career Development or related experience;
- Is able to work confidently with diverse student populations and is committed to practicing and promoting inclusivity;
- Has effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication and presentation skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- A strong interest in career development, familiarity with job application materials, LinkedIn, industry and academic job search
- Previous experience in advising, teaching, and workshop/conference planning is desirable, although training will be provided;
- Comfortable working with students from diverse backgrounds and a variety of disciplines
- Previous experience in web development
