STEM Project Mentor

As a mentor for YMP, you will have the opportunity to guide students from around the world, including those from underprivileged backgrounds who lack access to traditional STEM mentors. You will provide individualized support to middle and high school students, helping them unleash their creativity and apply their STEM skills to real-world projects from start to finish. Your support will include regular meetings and ongoing communication.

This position is year-round with flexible hours and commitment levels. You can mentor as many projects as your schedule allows and coordinate meeting times directly with students to ensure mutual convenience.

Mentorship Roles and Responsibilities

As a mentor with YMP, you will have the unique experience of teaching and mentoring students globally on STEM projects that make a real impact on their local community. You will be able to provide guidance that you wish you had received when you were the mentees’ age. Mentors can range from undergraduate students to industry professionals, and they will be paired with students based on their level of expertise and the specific needs of the students.

Program Structure

Our mentorship program is structured to provide a flexible yet comprehensive learning experience for students. As a mentor, you will be part of this structure, providing guidance and support to students as they navigate their learning journey.

Mentors can opt to mentor pro bono or charge an hourly rate, which will be passed on directly to students with an added 10% commission to cover our operating costs.

  • Onboarding Training: You’ll receive a set of videos to watch to learn about YMP, our mission and core values, as well as how to get started with mentoring a student.
  • Initial Contact: Once you join as a mentor, you will be listed on our platform for matching with a student. Student will be able to reach out to you
  • Regular Check-ins: Once you have matched with a student, you should establish regular check-ins with the students through live meetings. Each student should be given around 10 hours of individual support, at least once every two weeks, though the specific amount of sessions and frequency of meetings can be determined between the student and mentor directly.
  • Ongoing Support: Throughout the program, you will provide ongoing support to your mentees. This includes answering questions, providing feedback on their work, and guiding them through challenges. This ongoing support is key to helping your mentees stay motivated, overcome obstacles, and achieve their learning goals.

Skills and Requirements:

  • STEM Background: Mentors should be pursuing a STEM degree in college or working in a STEM field.
  • Passion for Mentoring: A genuine interest in mentoring and supporting students in their STEM education.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively guide and support students.
  • Flexibility: Ability to adapt to the needs of students and coordinate schedules for meetings.
  • Commitment: Willingness to provide ongoing support and feedback to students throughout their projects.
