JOB TITLE: Technical Services Specialist
STATUS: Non-Exempt, Full Time
SHIFT: 37.5 hours per week. May be required to work occasional evenings and weekends depending on library needs.
WAGES: $15.68 per hour
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
The Technical Services Specialist contributes to the effective operations of the library by assisting with the ordering, cataloging, and processing of library materials and the automated functions of the integrated library system. Work involves placing orders for library materials, receiving and checking shipments from vendors and/or donors, classifying materials, making materials shelf-ready, and maintaining the library's automated system. Reports to the Technical Services Manager.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with library services related to the acquisition and preparation of materials for patron use
- Maintain an accurate, up-to-date list of periodicals and alert Prairiecat staff to any inconsistencies regarding library materials in their database
- Follow the established workflow for the acquisition and processing of new materials, and for the discard of materials that have been removed from the collection in any format including books, periodicals, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, playaways, and kits
- Order new library materials using approved vendors as directed; maintain documentation for all orders
- Receive, unpack, and process all new and donated library materials, and deaccess and discard weeded materials
- Classify all library materials using MARC records and according to AACR2 cataloging rules
- Prepare materials for display, affix stickers and barcodes, donation stickers, etc.
- Repair damaged library materials when possible
- Represent the library at professional meetings, activities, and conferences as assigned; prepare written reports for the Library Director about these events and new learnings as requested
- Remain current on trends in Technical Services through consortium meetings, workshops, and other appropriate seminars
- Participate in regular team communication to discuss and develop procedures, expectations, issues and concerns, library communication, and community involvement
- Contribute to a monthly report on Technical Services including statistics as directed
- Provide staff training to other departments as requested
- Provide friendly, courteous, and accurate service to all library users
- May participate in the development and implementation of new library services or projects
- Perform other duties as assigned
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent required, Bachelor’s degree or LTA preferred
- One year professional library experience in Technical Services department preferred
- Knowledge of general record keeping, library circulation, and privacy practices
- Knowledge of standard library procedures, current information technology, internet and database search capabilities
- Knowledge of best practices in cataloging and Technical Services, including guidelines and standards published by ALA and other recognized organizations
- Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System, OCLC cataloging software, MARC records, and AACR2 cataloging rules
- Ability to communicate effectively with others, orally and in writing, including through email
- Ability to use a computer and type accurately with attention to detail
- Ability to neatly affix stickers, barcodes, tape, and other materials to items quickly and accurately
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, patrons, user groups, community organizations, volunteer groups, and to serve the public courteously
- Ability to learn and stay current with emerging technology, including digital media
