Library Resource Center Director

Title: Library Resource Center (LRC) Director Reports 

To: The LRC Director is under the direct supervision of the principal and must also respond to requests from the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Job

 Goal: The job of the Library Resource Center Director was established for the purposes of developing, promoting, and implementing a program that will help prepare students to be effective, ethical users and creators of ideas and information in the 21st century. In addition, the Library Resource Center Director promotes a culture that fosters an appreciation of literature and nurtures lifelong reading. Performance Responsibilities Information, Media, and Digital Literacy Teaching and Learning Practices 

● Creates and implements learning experiences that foster and develop information literacy and information technology skills, dispositions, and responsibilities ● Ensures that students learn to ethically and effectively acquire, evaluate, analyze, synthesize, create and share information utilizing current tools and formats while addressing a variety of authentic purposes across all content areas 

● Fosters a culture of inquiry, while scaffolding learning to empower all learners

 ● Encourages and facilitates the use of technology tools by staff and students, while transforming opportunities to work through the 4Cs (communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity)

 ● Cultivates the literacy skills, dispositions, and responsibilities for students to construct informed decisions, evidence-based arguments, and the avenues/means to effect change ● Uses technology tools to connect the school with the global learning community for the purpose of deepening students’ understanding of the world around them 

● Creates and sustains an environment that promotes free inquiry and a broad range of ideas for the purpose of exposing students to divergent opinions and perspectives 

● Develops lessons that empower students to become critical thinkers who can comprehend, analyze, evaluate, and synthesize text in both print and digital format for the purpose of addressing multiple literacies 

● Teaches the ethical use of information and promotes the social interchange of ideas for the purpose of developing responsible digital citizens Reading and Literacy Advocacy 

● Administers the library program, developing policies and procedures for the purpose of ensuring efficient operation and services 

● Prepares and administers the LRC budget for the purpose of building the collection, maintaining subscriptions, and supporting library programming 

● Develops and maintains a relevant collection of fiction and nonfiction in a variety of formats to support the curriculum and engage students, while exposing them to an array of ideas, cultures, and perspectives through quality literature 

● Works with parents, teachers, students, administrators, and community members for the purpose of supporting and enhancing learning 

● Actively promotes reading and library use through activities such as storytelling, book talks, displays, reading programs and special events for the purpose of motivating and encouraging independent reading for pleasure, understanding, and personal growth ● Maintains an accurate catalog to facilitate access to library resources and conducts an inventory on a regular basis Instructional Partner 

● Collaborates with classroom teachers and colleagues for the purpose of integrating critical thinking skills, information literacy, and technology skills into the grade level curriculum 

● Provides staff development opportunities in the use of information resources in a variety of formats throughout the curriculum for the purposes of connecting students and staff to quality resources 

● Serves as the staff resource on library-related issues such as copyright and intellectual property for the purposes of promoting the ethical use of information 

● Listens to and acts upon ideas from peers, teachers, and students for the purpose of enhancing LRC services 

● Participates in curriculum development on building and district levels to support building and district initiatives 

● Arranges for flexible scheduling of the school library to provide student accessibility to staff and resources at point of need 

● Evaluates web applications and education technology tools to inform school-wide use and purchasing decisions 

● Participates in ongoing professional development Other Functions: ● Supports the implementation of MAP testing 

● Supervises support staff, which may include educational assistants, volunteers, and student assistants 

● Coordinates classroom-wide, school-wide global awareness, service learning, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, & mathematics) activities 

● Performs other duties as assigned Qualifications Specific skill-based competencies required to perform the functions of the job include: 

● Troubleshooting technology including student devices; 

● Operating standard office equipment including using pertinent computer software; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and proper English usage, grammar, spelling and punctuation 

● Preparing and maintaining accurate records Specific knowledge-based competencies required to perform the functions of the job include: 

● Automated library systems, (for example: Destiny)

 ● Children’s and young adult literature

 ● Information literacy skills 

● Effective practices in designing student research

 ● Research models (for example: Big 6 or Independent Investigation Method) Specific ability-based competencies required to perform the functions of the job include:

 ● Apply current educational research and theory to instructional program 

● Plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and the needs and abilities of students

 ● Establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups 

● Maintain confidentiality 

 

 Adapt to changing work priorities Certification: 

● Possess a current Professional Educator’s License with a Library Media Specialist endorsement.

 ● Possess a Master’s Degree in Library Information Science (preferred) Language Skills Ability to read, analyze and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedural directives. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, parents, administrators and the general public. Mathematical Skills Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. 

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. Reasoning Ability Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in writing, oral, diagram or schedule form. Other Skills and Abilities

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to the instructional program. 

Ability to plan and implement lessons based on content knowledge, school objectives and the needs and abilities of the students. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, and colleagues. Ability to communicate orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and Board of Education policies.
