Project Engineer
Job Summary: The Project Engineer will be expected to gain exposure in construction repair projects within the commercial, public and industrial markets in order to gain knowledge and provide support for field project management, business development, and the estimating team.
Responsibilities:
- Actively participate in and learn the following: Contract management, claims management, and dispute resolution; materials, methods, and the tools involved in construction or repair of commercial, public, industrial, or other related structures; business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources remodeling, leadership techniques, production methods, and coordination of people and resources; principles and processes for providing customer and personal services, practical application of engineering science and technologies, design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models; English language including understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
- Gain exposure to construction repair projects within the commercial, public, industrial, power & utility markets and learn means and methods related to concrete, masonry, post tensioning, and all other methods assigned or required.
- Support and coordinate efforts including job pre-planning, job set-up, crew assignments, change order management, resource management, quality control, scheduling, management of subcontractors and equipment, purchasing of materials, inventory management, and generating documentation. Coordinate all deliveries to the job site with client, PM, and Superintendent and Project Team.
- Assist Project Managers, Superintendents, and other team members in tracking historical and actual Production Rates and material costs to discover items that might impact the schedule or budget. Prepare look-ahead schedules and help maintain overall project schedules.
- Learn the Estimating process through participation in all components and stages.
- Learn Business Development through participation in all aspects of the process.
- Be diligent and proactive with Project Managers and Field Leaders to understand project Assist development and implementation of solutions to address changes. Must understand and stay informed on subcontractor QA/QC, scope for work, and technical specifications.
- Assist Superintendent in preparing daily contractor logs and distribute to project teams.
- Gain an understanding of Office Administrative roles and responsibilities, new hire process, branch meeting facilitation tools/process, new user IT training process, branch Network Administration duties, IT file and personnel management, annual review process, benefits management, contract administration, claims management, payroll process, A/P & financial tracking, collections management, Resource/Shop/Inventory management, and D.O.T. requirements.
- Assist in preparing project estimates and bids, performing site inspections, and preparing material & quantity takeoffs.
- Assist Foreman/Superintendent and PM in mark up and tracking of as-built conditions as they occur.
- Work with the customer as the primary point of contact. Attend all required site meetings with the client Record, distribute, and track action items resulting from team meetings.
- Active involvement in day-to-day field work to understand work being performed.
- Assist Superintendent and Safety Facilitators with employee processing, including employee turnover, recruiting, and facilitating new hire/on-boarding process
- Work with Jobsite Foreman/Superintendent to coordinate efforts of various union workers.
- Prepare turnover checklists for shift work – distribute to project team and file.
- Prepare formal letters & other written communication to customers/owners
- Project Engineer must adhere to the Safety culture. Must be extremely safety conscious, setting an example for others by demonstrating that Safety is held in the highest regard. Wears safety equipment (hard hat, eye protection, ear protection, respiratory protection, etc.) as required by the safety specifications on the jobsite. Performs all work in strict compliance required jobsite safety procedures. Person will be expected to communicate expectations regarding our safety culture and hold employees accountable to safety standards/requirements. Will also review subcontractor safety reports and assist Superintendent in transmitting progress to the client as well as operations team.
- Assist Safety Facilitators with all safety documentation. Attend all job safety meetings. Must be actively involved in performing Task Hazard Analysis (TSA).
Min Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or related
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent documentation and organizational skills required
- Able to pass a respirator fit test and wear a respirator on specified jobsites.
- Must have a valid driver’s license, and agree to an MVR check in order to operate rental cars when traveling or business vehicles.
- Willing to work 50-55 hours per week, as well as being flexible with work hours – Work whenever/wherever needed to fulfill responsibilities to help meet and exceed the branch goals. Including night shift, out of town work, bad weather conditions, etc.
- Willing to work at protected heights in excess of 100 feet off the ground.
- Must be proficient with MS Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, and light PowerPoint
- Must be able to read blue-prints and plans
Preferred Experience:
- Previous internship or part-time experience in construction, or up to 3 years experience as a full-time, regular employee in the construction industry.
