Ramsey Canyon Preserve Manager, AZ

The Ramsey Canyon Preserve Manager develops, manages, and advances conservation programs, plans, and methods for TNC fee lands in the Upper San Pedro River Basin. Area of responsibility includes two preserves of small to medium size including Ramsey Canyon, and Canelo Hills Cienega Preserve, along with several other small isolated TNC properties in the region.  This position will report to the Stewardship Program Manager and is based at the Ramsey Canyon Preserve in Hereford, Arizona.  The position involves interactions with nearby agencies such as the USFS and the Ft. Huachuca Military Base and requires frequent interaction with visiting public.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Preserve Manager should live in or around Hereford, AZ (within 50 miles of the preserve), Working with the Stewardship Program Manager, the Ramsey Canyon Preserve Manager provides technical leadership and support to preserve staff and volunteers and plans and directs preserve management programs and stewardship.  The preserve manager addresses critical threats to natural systems and individual species, fosters cross-site learning among conservation community, and supplies the Arizona Business Unit (AZBU) conservation and science programs with site or landscape level information. The preserve manager develops and implements conservation strategies and employs a full range of protection tools to acquire varying degrees of legal interest in land and implements a variety of strategies to secure public and private support for TNC conservation priorities.  The preserve manager coordinates community support, ensures the maintenance of preserve areas frequented by the visiting public, is responsible for hydrological and fee land monitoring, and provides general support for the stewardship program and preserve system.

A. Preserve Operation and Management (Approximately 55%)
1. Ensures preserve is accessible to the public during operating schedule.
2. Oversees public operations and maintenance of preserve areas used by the visiting public, such as visitor center, restrooms, public water system, and trails.
3. Recruits, trains, and manages a large volunteer staff.
4. Focuses on preserve stewardship (care of the land) and the Conservancy’s strategic goals through operation and management of preserve lands.
5. Oversees the development and management of the preserve budgets. May administer project budgets unique to the program area.
6. Monitors extant preserve properties in the watershed for security issues such as fence integrity and border activity.
7. Supervises project work (staff, volunteer, or contract) that occurs on the preserves.
8. Operates and maintains tools, equipment, heavy machinery.
9. Repairs and maintains facilities and infrastructure.  
10. Troubleshoots technical and equipment problems as required.

B. Supervision - (Approximately 15%)
1. Ensures: (1) safety is prioritized in all aspects of preserve operations; (2) appropriate management and resolution of personnel issues; and (3) stewardship employees are connected to, and engaged with, the broader Chapter. 
2. Supervises technical, administrative and professional staff with responsibility for performance management, training and development. 
3. Regularly meets with direct reports and carries out formal quarterly and year-end performance conversations.
4. Timely and accurate completion of administrative functions such as regular on-going check-ins with employees, performance reviews, expense reports, and timecards.

C. Relationship Building with Partners (Approximately 15%)
1. Represents TNC in the local community at meetings and collaborative groups.
2. Supports internal and external parties doing scientific research and monitoring on the preserves.
3. Cultivates relationships with landowners, agencies, community groups, and NGOs.
4. Works with partners to further landscape-scale conservation efforts in the watershed.
5. Hosts public events at the preserves.
6. Supports outreach efforts such as speaking to other organizations and conducting the annual Kids Camp.
7. Works to recruit volunteers from within the local community.

D. Land and Water Monitoring (Approximately 5%)
1. Streamflow, wet/dry, groundwater, and other water monitoring as necessary and/or assigned in the Upper San Pedro River basin.
2. Fee lands monitoring and reporting within the Upper San Pedro River Program as coordinated with the Protection Program.
3. Plans and executes monitoring on the preserves, such as wet/dry mapping, bird, insect, and plant surveys.

E. Other Duties (Approximately 10%)
1. Works with other site managers and stewardship staff statewide on special projects and events. 
2. Collaborates with Stewardship Program Manager and Preserve managers on overlapping responsibilities and to fill in for one another during absences.
3. Frequent travel within Arizona to visit preserves, meetings, training, etc. (with possible over-night / weekend stays). Occasional travel in U.S. for trainings, etc. 
4. Timely completion of miscellaneous administrative tasks such as training, expense reports, and timecards.
5. Other duties as assigned and directed by supervisor.


RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
  •  Administers budget authority. May negotiate contracts with support.
  •  Performs tasks with minimal supervision and makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and context.
  •  Supervises technical, administrative, and professional staff with responsibility for performance management, training and development. 
  •  Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
  •  Coordinates with Youth Safety Office to assure compliance with TNC’s Youth Safety Policy when activities may include youth. 
  •  May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. 
  •  May work longer workdays, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  •  Other duties as assigned.


WHAT YOU'LL BRING
  •  Bachelor’s degree and 3 years’ experience in natural resource management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  •  Experience managing staff or volunteers.
  •  Relationship building experience to work with a variety of partners such as media, government officials, landowners, and internal scientists.
  •  Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
  •  Experience with communication via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
  •  Experience training others.
  •  Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers, etc.
  •  Performing physically strenuous work in outdoor elements, lifting and carrying a 35 lb. pack and walking a majority of the day. 
  •  Valid driver's license.  
  •  Youth qualified (within first 30 days; annually thereafter).


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  •  3-5 years related experience in natural resource management or equivalent combination of education and experience.  
  •  Ability to recognize plant and animal species to complete preserve management activities. 
  •  Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation
  •  Experience working with diverse group of stakeholders including governmental agencies, environmental organizations, local political offices, and private companies.
  •  Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including supervising and training staff, work crews, and volunteers. 
  •  Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g., tractor, lawn mower, chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment).   
  •  Basic understanding of facilities maintenance and systems and use of hand and power tools along with experience managing outside vendors. 
  •  Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
