 Olympia, Washington – Thurston County

 

This position may be eligible for telework.   The default assigned work location for this position is in Olympia, Washington.  Frequency of onsite work will vary based on business and operational needs.

 

Anticipated Season Length:  7 Months
June 2 – December 31

 

Be responsible for collecting, maintaining, and summarizing fishery and biological data using established protocols.

 

Represent WDFW in the management of Puget Sound salmon resources, recreational and commercial fishing interests consistent with obligations.

 

With that in mind, you will assist in developing scientific methodology, protocols, and data analysis directed toward the management of chum, pink, and sockeye salmon.

 

With your experience, you will support the chum, pink, sockeye salmon species specialist in data analysis and summaries.

 

We are seeking a candidate to assist the chum, pink, and sockeye species specialist with in-season data processing, summarization, and analysis.

 

Here are some things you will do in this role:


Maintains fisheries and biological field data and field data systems for chum, pink, and sockeye salmon from Puget Sound Waters: 

  • Develop and maintain biological field collection databases, ensuring that data are collected in a consistent and uniform manner.
  • Review data collection, providing QA/QC to correct any errors.
  • Assist the chum, pink, and sockeye salmon specialist in providing data summaries and fulfilling data requests from regional and co-management staff, as well as constituents.

Provide support to meet the objectives and goals of establishing a comprehensive chum management plan: 

  • Assist Pink, Chum, Sockeye lead specialist with managing and summarizing historical escapement, run reconstruction, and harvest datasets.
  • Assist in developing methodology to monitor and evaluate stock and population dynamics of chum salmon.
  • Review technical documents and peer reviewed literature.

Assist unit staff during in-season chum genetic stock identification data collection and processing: 

  • Perform field collections, sampling according to an established protocol.
  • Facilitate the transfer of biological samples from field staff to genetics and aging labs.

Support fishery data management and in-season processes: 

  • Update and maintain website application tools and data.
  • Provide weekly summaries of sampling, biological data, and commercial catch information.
  • Participate in weekly meetings to convey data summaries.

Serve as research support to the chum, pink, sockeye salmon species specialist: 

  • Summarize and review data from scientific published literature.
  • Provide review and feedback of internal technical reports and publications.
  • Support regional and/or Science Division sampling and monitoring field operations when needed.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Most of the work is conducted in the office (90% of the time), but field work may be occasionally required the months of September through December. Field work may include inclement weather, rough water, noise, odors, repetitive movements of hands, finger manipulations, long periods of sitting, squatting, walking, operating a boat with outboard motor, climbing in and out of boats, sampling salmon in a boat, carrying, bending, kneeling, lifting (50 lb. max.), working and standing in a confined space, working with fish blood and slime, slippery surfaces, raingear, equipment holsters, personal floatation devices, using knives and other equipment around fish, possible encounters with bees, yellow jackets, and other insects.
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations. 
    • Telework eligible for up to 80% of the office work upon supervisor approval. 
  • Schedule:
    • Typically, Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
    • Occasional evening and weekend work may be needed.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Travel will be required to field sites October – November, occasionally with overnight/weekend work (approximately 10-14 days annually).
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Agency desktop computer, agency laptop, agency phone, agency vehicles, personal flotation device, field and marine electronics.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Statewide Salmon Manager. Modeling staff (i.e., FRAM). Salmon & steelhead stock assessment staff. Puget Sound and Ocean Sampling Unit staff and supervisors. Puget Sound Salmon Management Unit staff and supervisor. WDFW regional biologists. Tribal and Northwest Indian Fishery Commission (NWIFC) representatives, including NWIFC biometricians. Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada staff. Pacific Salmon Commission staff. Canadian First Nations representatives. Commercial fishing industry representatives. WDFW staff (biometricians and salmon policy lead managers).

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science.

And
 
 

  • One (1) year of professional experience in fish, wildlife, and/or habitat management or research.

 

Please note:

  • Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.
  • A Master’s degree or Ph.D. in the applicable science will substitute for the required experience.

 

License:

  • Valid driver’s license.


Special Requirement/Condition of Employment:

  • Successful completion of agency training and/or certification for assigned watercraft is dependent on supervisory direction, position need, and training availability.

 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following: 

  • At least 1 year of demonstrated experience in managing data related to a scientific collection or a management of a natural resource.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word, at an intermediate to advanced level.
  • Working knowledge of R, SQL, Python, SAS, or other statistical and computing software.
  • Effectively organizes multiple assignments, sometimes of a complex nature or involving competing priorities, to produce work products that are accurate, thorough, and on time.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Salmon life histories and habitat requirements.
  • Knowledge of Puget Sound Salmon Stocks.
