Building Security and Special Events

NMU Police Department Summer Employment

 

The NMU Police Department is looking for an NMU student employee to work Building Security and Special Events shifts over the summer.

If student employees are signed up for Fall 2024 Semester classes, they can expect to work 30 – 40 hours a week. However, per NMU policy, if student employees are signed up for Summer 2024 classes, they can only work a maximum of 24 hours a week.  Work hours will be discussed further in person during job interviews.

 

Hourly rate

$10.90

 

Typical Workweek for 30 – 40 Hours Per Week:

The student employee will work Building Security shifts Monday through Friday (5 p.m. to 11 p.m.).  If a Special Event occurs on a Friday, the Friday Building Security shift will be canceled to cover the Special Event. If a Special Event occurs on a Saturday, the student can work the extra hours if they do not exceed 40 hours per week.

A Building Security shift at the beginning of the week can be traded to work a Saturday Special Events shift if the student employee does not want the extra hours or if the student will exceed 40 hours while working the Special Events shift.

 

Typical Workweek for 24 Hours Per Week:

The student employee will work Building Security Tuesday through Friday (5 p.m. to 11 p.m.). If a Special Event occurs on a Friday or Saturday, the Building Security shifts will be canceled to cover the Special Events shift.

 

Time off:

The schedule for Building Security shifts can be flexible if time off is needed during the week.   Special Events shifts are a priority, and the schedule cannot be flexible.

 

 Job Descriptions

Building Security 

         Job Description:

  • Under Police Sergeant/Officer supervision, performs building security checks of campus buildings on foot or in a department vehicle. Must possess a valid Driver’s License. 

 

         Duties:

  • Check exterior doors and windows to ensure they are closed and secured.

 

  • Walk inside campus buildings to look for issues such as people inside buildings after hours, water leaks, maintenance issues, etc.

 

  • Secure interior rooms as required.

 

  • Maintain a daily activity log and building status sheet indicating times buildings are secured and problems located, if any.

 

  • Maintain radio contact with the Police Department Dispatcher as required.

 

  • Advises the Police Department Dispatcher of suspicious situations or individuals via radio or phone.

 

  • Performs other related duties, as well as special parking and security details, as requested by supervisors.

 

  • Work safely, being aware of personal safety and the safety of others.

 

Special Events 

         Shift Hours:  

  • Hours will vary depending on the event.   Most events are on Fridays and Saturdays during the evening hours.  Typical hours are 5 p.m. – midnight.

         Job Description:

  • Under Police Sergeant/Officer and Student Coordinator/Assistant Coordinator supervision, conduct parking, security, and other related duties at campus sporting and other special events (i.e., Weddings, Banquets, etc.)

         Job Duties

  • Conduct parking details, traffic direction, and related duties at sporting and special events.

 

  • Provide security/observation services at sporting and special events.

 

  • Maintain contact with other special events employees via radio.

 

  • Advises the Police Department Dispatcher of suspicious situations or individuals via radio or phone.

 

  • Work safely, being aware of personal safety and the safety of others.

  • Appropriate dress for the assigned duty. (Clothing designating the student as a Police Department Employee may be required and is provided by the department as needed.)

 

Background checks will be conducted on all students hired by the NMU Police Department. Any offer of employment is contingent on background check results.
