Fundamental Analyst

Company Overview:

Seldon Capital is an investment firm based in San Francisco. Our mission is to push forward the craft of investing by combining deep fundamental research and machine learning.  Our focus is on forecasting boom and bust cycles caused by new technologies, industry change, and government policy. We seek to understand and predict the future quality of businesses which sit at the fulcrum of value creation and destruction in those cycles.  We invest long and short across stocks, bonds, currencies, and commodities. The team previously worked together at Soros Fund Management and have worked separately at firms such as Lone Pine Capital, Goldman Sachs, Balyasny, and Coatue.

The right candidate will have a passion for understanding great businesses and important technological, industry, and macro cycles. Intellectual curiosity, strong quantitative skills, and an ability to convert ideas into models and metrics that can be tracked with data are required. Interest in forecasting competitions (e.g. Good Judgment Project, Metaculus, etc.) and machine learning competitions (e.g. Kaggle) are a plus.

 

Job Description:

We are seeking a Fundamental Analyst to research investment ideas with a focus on deep value, special situations, and event driven opportunities across equity and credit.

The successful candidate will have the following attributes:

  • A strong desire and curiosity to forecast the long-term quality of businesses
  • Ability to rapidly iterate across different ideas with a strong intuition for discerning the key research questions for an investment
  • Entrepreneurial and commercially-minded in sourcing ideas and datasets across a broad network of talented people
  • Spirit of discovery in finding overlooked and undervalues securities across the world
  • Growth mentality in learning and collaborating closely with a highly-experienced, fundamental research team
  • Resilience and grit in solving problems and finding the most efficient way to come to an answer
  • Experience with special situations (spin-offs, divestitures, credit restructuring, shareholder/capital return, etc.) is a plus

The analyst would be responsible for maintaining forecasts for the total return of securities and company fundamentals while conducting ongoing, on-the-ground diligence.

Required Qualifications & Skillset:

Bachelor's degree from a top-tier university

Skillsets of an investigative journalist

A strong understanding of financial statement analysis and the ability to create and maintain a range of valuation and company models

Ability to work well independently and as a member of a team. We highly value flexibility, ability to prioritize and creative problem solving.
