Employment Operations Assistant

SUMMER POSITION OPEN

Assist the Manager of Employment Operations and Training by completing daily tasks essential to hiring, retaining, and recruiting students for employment within NMU Dining Services and Auxiliary.

During the Academic Year, shifts are between 8 am - 5 pm Monday through Friday. Occasional evenings and weekend work are required. 

Summer shifts are between 730 am and 4 pm Monday through Friday. Occasional evenings and weekend work are required. 

Position Minimum Requirements

  • Must be a registered student attending NMU (minimum credits 6 hours in Fall and Winter Semesters).
  • Available to work a minimum of 12 hours per week

Position Responsibilities

  • Assist in the hiring process of students' employment process  (tax forms, I-9’s, electronic deposit, etc.)
  • Maintains the integrity and confidentiality of employees files and records
  • Assist with payroll functions including processing, answering employee questions, fixing processing errors
  • Assist in the training and mentoring of newly hired team members
  • Recruitment of new employees
  • Communicates with unit leaders and other Departments (Human Resources, Information Technology, Housing, etc.) on behalf of the Manager of Employment Operations and Training
  • Assists with new hire orientation
  • Maintain a high level of customer service, anticipating and attending to customers’ needs.
  • Cooperate with other employees and share the workload.
  • Knowledge on how to properly handle a customer transaction.
  • Maintain and update databases and data collection, ensuring that it is accurate and consistently accomplished
  • Ability to perform routine clerical duties that support the operation(s), such as but not limited to; making copies, data entry, filing, running errands, inner office mail deliveries, processing and maintaining reports, and other clerical duties as assigned
  • Assists with planning and execution of special events (Ignite, gratitude, graduation, etc)
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrate the ability to be punctual and dependable
  • Proficient in various computer software applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Suites)
  • Extensive telephone work is required
  • Excellent organizational and coordination skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy
  • Ability to take ownership of work duties and responsibilities, and ensure they are completed accurately and on time
  • Excellent organizational and coordination skills
  • Self-motivated, pragmatic, and solution-driven
  • The ability to quickly learn payroll management, human resource information systems, and similar computer applications

Additional Desirable Qualifications

  • Willingness to improve skills.
  • Be willing to take on new projects as deemed necessary
  • Available to work a minimum of 12 hours per week
  • Outgoing personality and ability to work well under pressure.
  • Summer availability preferred
