Construction & Maintenance Laborer - Utility Worker 2 - Non-Permanent - *04830-24

 UTILITY WORKER 2

 

Capital Asset Management Program (CAMP) – Region 3
 Yakima, Washington – Yakima County

 

Anticipated Appointment Length: 5.5 Months
May 16, 2024 – November 1, 2024 

 

CAMP’s mission is to deliver technical and professional engineering, construction, and maintenance to sustain facilities, infrastructure, and ecosystems under the Department’s care.

 

As our Construction & Maintenance Laborer, you will support the strategic goals and objectives to protect, restore, and enhance fish and wildlife populations and their habitats.

 

Assist the Maintenance Mechanics and Supervisors in maintaining grounds safety at project sites by performing various general semi-skilled manual labor that support various trades such as carpenters, equipment operators, welders, and mechanics.

 

This is an opportunity to assist in the installation, maintenance and repair of pipes, valves, and gates.

We are seeking a candidate to assist in the performance of minor building maintenance jobs or other agency properties statewide.

 

 

Here are some things you will do in this role:


Physical Labor on Construction and Maintenance Projects: 

  • Performs various general manual labors that support various trades such as carpenters, equipment operators, welders, and mechanics.  
  • Digs and back fills ditches and trenches; cuts and removes woody debris; grounds restoration; cleans fish screens; and concrete forming.  
  • Loads, unloads, and moves supplies, materials, or equipment to and from work site.

Metal Fabrication: 

  • May assist in welding and repair of various metal structures.
  • Cuts pipe, plate, and other materials.
  • Operates a variety of fabrication shop equipment such as oxyacetylene and arc welders, hand or electric pipe threaders, grinding wheels, buffers, and drill presses.

 Equipment Operation: 

  • Operates motorized vehicles such as trucks and trailers combo to transport equipment, supplies, and materials.  
  • Operates hand and power tools, weed whacker, chain saw, pneumatic tamper, and portable pumps.

Site Handling: 

  • Assists with preparation of new construction sites. 
  • Cleans up rubble and debris and remove waste materials.
  • Maintains a clean job site: pick up all tools and equipment and secure job site each day in order to eliminate potential hazards.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Duties are performed in a fabrication shop and on occasion at construction sites at hatcheries and wildlife areas. Hazards include working on rough terrain, riverbanks, slippery slopes, and other surfaces, confined and difficult to reach spaces, and in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat, rain, or show.  Bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, and lifting of 50 pounds repetitively when loading and unloading trucks or moving materials around project site.
    • Some tasks will involve working at a desk on a computer. Office hazards include working under fluorescent light, repetitively entering data into computer, looking at computer monitor for long periods of time, sitting or standing for long periods of time.
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Schedule:
    • Typically, 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday - Thursday.
    • Work overtime as needed/requested, which may include overnight stays and evening and weekend work.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Travel required 60-80% depending on season, including overnight travel.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Basic hand tools, power tools such as drills, roto hammers, cut off saws, circular saws, hydraulic punch, metal band saws, welders, cutting torch, plasma cutter, chainsaws, and/or powered motors; automotive equipment and trailers.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Frequent interactions varying between Federal, Local, Inter-Agency, and Intra-Agency customers and vendors.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED.

And

  • Two (2) years of experience as a Utility Worker 1 or equivalent education/experience.

And

  • Physical strength to do required work.


License:

  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following: 

  • One (1) year of experience in the use of tools and equipment commonly used by laborers in the construction trade.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certification 
  • Forklift Certification
  • Electrical or alarm experience.
  • Roofing experience.
