Genidaqs Laboratory Summer Internship

We are excited to announce the opening of a Summer Internship at our Genidaqs Laboratory in West Sacramento, CA for undergraduate students currently enrolled in a 4-year university program in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biological Sciences or related field. This full-time 8-week program (May 20 - July 12) provides an opportunity to learn, develop, and apply cutting edge genetic- and molecular-based laboratory processes to address environmental issues that affect fish and wildlife. This internship will assist Genidaqs scientists in conducting laboratory work, field work, data collection, data synthesis and problem solving. DURATION: May 20th through July 12th, 2024.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct work in a safe, efficient, and professional manner.
  • Work with Internship mentor to develop a 6-week research project following the scientific method. Topics will be assigned.
  • Learn and demonstrate micro-pipetting skills.
  • Extract DNA and/or environmental DNA (eDNA) from specimens or water samples.
  • Perform PCR, qPCR and/or metabarcoding.
  • Perform work in the field that may require physical exertion.
  • Assist in general laboratory cleanliness.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Present initial study design and final research project at laboratory meetings.

EDUCATION / MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least one year in a Bachelor's degree program in Molecular Biology, Genetics, or related science degree.
  • An understanding of micropipette use with the ability to learn the fine motor movements required to pass proficiency test.
  • An understanding of DNA extraction techniques, PCR, qPCR, metabarcoding and DNA sequencing.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect, record, and synthesize high-quality data sets for lab or field experiments independently or with a team.
  • Demonstrated expertise and passion for science, natural resources and providing usable information for resolving complex problems.
  • Demonstrated skills in data collection, entry, and analysis, developing graphs and communicating project methods and findings in presentations and reports.

ABOUT GENIDAQS: The Genidaqs Lab is a business unit within Cramer Fish Sciences - a fisheries research consulting firm that serves the Pacific West. Genidaqs team members provide clients with access to cutting edge genetic- and molecular ecology-based techniques applicable to solving today's resource management issues. We are searching for a Summer Intern with the right mix of molecular biology/genetic laboratory skills, environmental sampling experience, natural curiosity, and passion for the scientific process. This position is predominantly laboratory bench based, with occasional field days.

COMPENSATION: $16 per hour (depending upon experience).
