Civil Engineer Resource Assistant

MobilizeGreen seeks a conservation-minded Civil Engineer Resource Assistant to serve 32 weeks with the Huron-Manistee National Forests. The Resource Assistant (RA) will work with the Huron-Manistee National Forests (HMNF) Engineering team on projects and program activities across the HMNF. The RA will assist engineers and engineering technicians with facilities (buildings, w/ww, dams), transportation (roads, bridges), and develop recreation (campgrounds, trails) related construction, maintenance, and inspection projects. Work could include all project phases such as data collection and analysis, surveying and staking, design and plan development, construction inspection and reporting.

 

The Resource Assistants Program is designed for recent graduates and new professionals to launch their natural and cultural resources careers. The RA will receive hands-on learning experience, mentorship, and coaching to complete mission-critical work while developing leadership, critical thinking, and strategic communication skills. This is a developmental program.

Location: Huron-Manistee National Forests

 

Term: 32 weeks, starting July 15, 2024; Full-time (40hrs/week)

 

Duty Station: HMNF Supervisor's Office; 1755 South Mitchell Street; Cadillac, MI 49601

Position Duties:

  • Plans and carries out work in accordance with approaches that have been structured by others.
  • Conducting preliminary surveys and site investigations to obtain baseline and field data on soils, topography, drainage, existing structures and utilities, and feasible layout of proposed roads, facilities or structures in relation to terrain.
  • Investigates various routes and locations for proposed roads and trails using aerial photos and topographic maps, performs location reconnaissance and flags routes along corridors established by the transportation plan, prepares location reports, and determines most economical design to meet multiple use needs and construction feasibility.
  • Operates survey equipment such as total station, engineer's level, GPS, etc. Makes field surveys, topographic maps and specific locations for such items as roads, trails, water distribution systems, wastewater treatment systems, parking areas, campsites, and other minor structures.
  • Inspects aspects of contract and force account construction for roads, trail bridges, buildings and other structures ensuring compliance with plans, specifications, and other contract terms, and reports findings to the supervisor.
  • Prepares design criteria for smaller or less complex portions of conventional roads, facilities, or structures. Computes quantities and makes cost estimates based on cost data and knowledge of project, terrain, and climate.
  • Participates in field surveys and investigations of existing facilities and utility systems to ensure that maintenance and repair schedules and procedures conform to safety, health, and regulatory requirements.
     

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
  • Knowledge of basic professional civil engineering principles and concepts sufficient to apply standard engineering practices in limited phases of survey, design, construction, and/or maintenance projects (required)
  • Skill in expressing thoughts both verbally and in writing is required to document and report on technical aspects of work (preferred, can be trained)
  • Experience with specialized computer programs and field equipment typically utilized to complete assignments such as AutoCAD, ArcGIS, GPS, TotalStation, etc. (preferred, can be trained)
  • Understanding of related physical science disciplines such as geology, hydrology, and soils mechanics (required)
  • A positive attitude and commitment to being an active participant on our team
  • A valid driver's license

 

Work Environment:

Fieldwork and administrative work in an office required. The RA may be required to travel and work in remote locations in the forest, independently, and in teams. Driving on and navigating forest roads may be required. May require working on active construction sites with strict safety protocols and in inclement weather for long periods of time. The work regularly requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky terrain; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, or reaching; or recurring moving, lifting and carrying of moderately heavy items.
