LTOCE: ENGR Mentor/Grader, Helpdesk

Department: Living With the Lab / Project-Based Learning / Engineering
ONLY for Undergraduate Students with current ENGR major (concentration irrelevant)

 

Duties and Responsibilities for three (3) roles available:

-         MENTOR: Attendance in class (4 hours/week). Assisting instructors during class/lab sessions, including problem solving and project troubleshooting assistance, maintenance issues reporting, gathering and preparing supplies for in-class activities, inventorying equipment and turning off machinery. Schedule set at beginning of each quarter. Will also serve as grader for assigned class.

-         GRADER: Viewing student homework submissions in Gradescope/Canvas in PDF format, utilizing a written grading rubric to provide grades and feedback for students, and returning to students before the next class period. May also be involved in managing class settings and homework submissions within Gradescope/Canvas. Schedule self-set, hours budget provided.

-         HELPDESK: Supervising lab operations for open access to students, including safety protocol. May be called upon to answer questions, troubleshoot projects, or work through homework problems with students. Schedule set at beginning of each quarter, will take place between 4pm-6pm on weekdays.

-         Other occasional duties – Proctoring exams, supervising student lab use, assisting with the spring design showcase event.

 

Requirements:

-         MUST have completed ENGR/HNRS 120 series

-         MUST be current ENGR major (concentration irrelevant)

-         Provide name of faculty reference - preferably an instructor from a LWTL class (ENGR 120/121/122, HNRS 120/121/122).

-         Mentor: Attendance in class (4 hours/week)

-         Good communication skills (providing helpful critiques and grading, clarity in explaining troubleshooting, communicating with instructor and supervisor)

-         Basic mobility (moving around classrooms, reaching over or under things, etc.)

-         Knowledge of safety procedures around machinery and sharp objects

-         Comfortable with using and learning software (will need to use Workday, Excel, PDF viewer, Gradescope,  Canvas, SOLIDWORKS)

-         Trustworthy with reporting hours and completed tasks

-         Professionalism and courtesy

 

FINANCIAL AID DISCLOSURE

•      Students must be enrolled at least half-time to be eligible for student employment. Half time enrollment is defined as 4 hours for undergraduates or 3 hours for graduates. Students who drop below half-time will no longer be eligible for student employment and must cease working.

•      Students must have an overall GPA of 2.0 for undergraduates and a 3.0 for graduates during their employment. First time freshmen must have an ACT Composite score of 20 or higher at time of employment.

•      Students may work a maximum of 20 hours a work week, and are not allowed to work during scheduled class times.

•      Student workers will be allowed to hold only one job at a time during an academic year (ex: FWS, Graduate Assistantship, Regular Funds)

•      New student workers must have valid identification documents (non-expired passport or driver’s license and social security card)

•      International students must have a current passport, I-94, and social security card
