AppleTree’s mission is to close the achievement gap before students get to kindergarten. To accomplish this mission, we focus exclusively on Preschool and Pre-K education. We provide free, full-day public charter school programming for three- and four-year olds in 12 locations across Washington, DC, employing our innovative and award winning instructional model, called Every Child Ready (ECR). This instructional model provides educators with tools and resources for “What to Teach”, “How to Teach” and “How to Measure Success.” Our instructional model is also used with partners across the nation. We continuously test and improve this model through feedback from AppleTree educators, partners and other stakeholders to ensure that children are learning and exploring through play and appropriate instruction.
Position Summary
The Human Resources Manager is an integral member of the People/Human Resources team at AppleTree. The HR Manager will serve as a generalist contributing to and leading one or more HR disciplines including talent management, employee relations, employee engagement, compensation and benefits, training and development, compliance and workplace safety.
What you’ll do…
Serve as senior Human Resources business partner across AppleTree’s lines of business
Manage and resolve complex employee relations issues. Conducts effective, thorough and objective investigations and provide recommendations for resolve
Provide day-to-day performance management guidance to line management (e.g., coaching, counseling, career development, disciplinary actions);
Manage refinement of performance management protocols; Assist managers in drafting performance improvement plans, counseling memos and facilitating performance conversations
Work closely with management and employees to improve work relationships, build morale, and increase productivity and retention
Participate in evaluation and monitoring of training programs to ensure success. Follow up to ensure training objectives are met; Design training programs as needed and/or identify external vendors based on organizational needs
Analyze trends and metrics in partnership with the broader HR team to develop solutions, programs and policies
Lead Employee Engagement programming analyzing Listening Tour and Staff Culture Survey feedback and designing programming to address needs
Lead design and execution of Staff Culture Survey, results analysis and draft recommendations for
Provide ongoing HR policy guidance and interpretation
Manage full cycle talent acquisition processes for in defined business unit including co-designing recruitment plans, writing/revising job descriptions, conducting in-take meetings with hiring managers, managing postings, conducting screenings, managing candidate disposition in applicant tracking system, scheduling interviews, conducting reference checks, and making/negotiating offers.
Lead preparation and updating of employee handbook
Manage offboarding processes for terminating staff including conducting exit interviews and analyzing and reporting on trends
Audit internal compliance processes and recommend and implement new solutions
Ensure compliance with federal, state and local employment laws, including but not limited to Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO)
Recommend and implement policies, programs and procedures to advance Diversity, Equity and Inclusion across AppleTree
What we’re looking for…
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Administration or a related field; Master Degree a plus
PHR or SHRM-CP certification preferred
Minimum 5 to 8 years of experience in Human Resources with a strong understanding of Human Resources policies and procedures
Experience managing people as well as one or more functional HR disciplines such as performance management, benefits and compensation, employee relations, recruitment, training and development or other
Experience in school/academic setting required; Other non-profit, community-based organization and/or other public service experience will be considered
Diplomatic with demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships with a variety of stakeholders
Entrepreneurial; Skilled in identifying problems and brainstorming effective solutions
Strong belief in AppleTree’s mission and values and passion for education
Proficient in the use of online technologies such as (but not limited to): Google Suite, Zoom, ADP Workforce Now or other HRIS platforms
