Public Policy and Program Support Intern

POSITION:
The National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS) is on a mission to transform science toward more human-relevant and humane solutions. NAVS’ advocacy efforts are focused on advancing legislation and regulations that deliver more human-relevant results while reducing the reliance on and use of animals. We advocate for these changes with audiences as diverse as supporters, grant-making organizations, government agencies, legislators, and scientists.
This position is responsible for assisting the Senior Manager of Advocacy and Policy to shape and advance policy initiatives and programmatic effortsThe Public Policy and Program Support Intern works to uncover contacts within government agencies for regulatory and legislative information at the federal and state level. You will work collaboratively with others at NAVS to advance our advocacy efforts.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Monitor legislative and regulatory tracking system (GovHawk) to track priority state and federal legislation and regulatory efforts.
- Write action alerts to supporters for state and federal legislation.
- Monitor and update our Advocacy Center.
- Conduct research in support of state-based legislative and regulatory activities (i.e. CHOICE map initiative).
- Complete FOIA requests to federal agencies and state institutions in support of campaigns focused on ending the use of non-human primates, dogs, and cats in research.
- Support additional programs related to humane education and 3Rs programs.
- Help develop stakeholder and grassroots strategies to advance program and policy efforts.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree (completed or in progress) in communications, public policy, or related field, or equivalent work experience required.
- Familiarity of the legislative process at the federal and state level preferred.
- Strong research, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently or as part of a team
- Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred.
