TPWD MISSION

To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This position is located in a very remote and rugged portion of the Chihuahuan Desert with extreme heat in the summer. Amenities are limited and cell signal is not always reliable.  It is highly recommended that applicants review, research, and visit the area before applying. The Big Bend region is also a gorgeous part of Texas with some of the best outdoor recreational opportunities and most interesting interpretive opportunities in the entire state featuring very mild to warm winters.

Under the direction of the Site Superintendent, this position performs routine (journey-level) operations work in a state park and is responsible for developing and implementing interpretive programs for the Big Bend Ranch Complex.  Operates the front desk POS system and performs all aspects of visitor services, including camping and day use registration, gift shop sales, and license sales.  Recruits for and supervises the park's volunteer program.  Develops and implements interpretive programs with emphasis on Cultural and Natural Resource protection and preservation and educational programs for all ages.  Responsible for supplying and disseminating information on Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Big Bend Ranch State Park, and interpretive programs to the general public.  Communicates with all units of the Big Bend Ranch Complex, Region 1, and Austin Headquarters about interpretive and public events for the Big Bend Ranch State Park Complex.  Conducts and supervises interpretive programs to include evening and weekend presentations, park tours, the volunteer program, and other programs as needed and assigned by the Park Superintendent.  Oversees the Fort Leaton Student docent program. Assists with the daily operation and maintenance of park facilities and adobe plastering, grounds, and equipment operations at Fort Leaton State Historic Site.  Operates all types of equipment, such as trucks, tractors, mowers, power, and hand tools.  Assists in enforcing park rules and regulations.  Performs resource management tasks and provides park interpretation services, provides guided tours, and assists with special events.  Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.  Performs additional duties as assigned.  Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.

 

Qualifications

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree.

Experience:

No experience required.

Licensure:   

If driving is required, applicant must possess a valid State driver’s license.

 

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS:

Education:

One year of experience in interpretation or conducting educational programs may substitute for 30 hours of the required education, with a maximum substitution of 120 semester hours.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:   

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree Park Administration, Recreation and Parks, Wildlife/Fisheries Science, Natural and/or Cultural Resource Conservation, Range Management, Forestry, Biology, Anthropology/Archeology, History, or closely related field.

Experience:

Experience in park interpretation and education;

Experience in natural and/or cultural resource management;

Experience in customer service and public relations;

Experience in volunteer supervision;

Experience in facility, grounds, equipment, and vehicle maintenance/repairs.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical, masonry, janitorial and mechanical maintenance, and repair tasks;

Knowledge of natural and cultural resource management and conservation principles;

Knowledge of backpacking skills and back country camping;

Knowledge of white water rafting and canoeing;

Knowledge of mountain biking;

Knowledge of the principles of park administration;

Knowledge of the fundamentals of natural and cultural resource management;

Knowledge of methods of interpretation and education;

Knowledge of standard financial and business management principles;

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Required to work in a public park with overnight camping and day use; 

Required to work 40 hours per week, includes various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays;

Required to work overtime as necessary during peak season; 

Required to respond to emergencies and on-call situations; 

Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures;

Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;

Required to perform manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

May be required to operate a State vehicle;

Required to travel 20% with possible overnight stays;

Non-smoking environment in State buildings in vehicles.
