6PPD Monitoring Field Lead (Natural Resource Scientist 2)
Keeping Washington Clean and Evergreen
The Environmental Assessment Program within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a 6PPD Monitoring Field Lead (Natural Resource Scientist 2) position. This position is located in our Headquarters Office in Lacey, WA. Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.
6PPD-quinone is a toxic chemical lethal to coho salmon and capable of contaminating water systems. In this exciting position, you will help develop and implement monitoring approaches to better characterize 6PPD-quinione and other related tire contaminants in the environment through the collection of stormwater and future collection of sediment and tissue samples. You will work alongside a strong, passionate team of environmental scientists in the Environmental Assessment Program’s Toxics Studies Unit. The data collected will aid researchers in understanding the fate and transport of 6PPD in the ecosystem, provide environmental baseline conditions for planners and engineers making recommendations and helping mitigation efforts, and support policy makers in phasing out 6PPD-quinone from tire manufacturing. You will also have opportunities to help the Toxic Studies Unit conduct environmental monitoring work statewide, primarily in freshwater ecosystems via watercraft.

Duties
What makes this role unique?
Since 6PPD-quinone was only recently discovered, we are still learning about this chemical and its impacts on wildlife. In this role, you have the exciting opportunity to contribute to a project that is leading the way in standardizing and developing monitoring methodologies and approaches.
What you will do:
- Research toxic tire wear particles and collaborate with internal and external scientific partners to assist in implementing, adapting, and refining the monitoring study design.
- Prepare quality assurance project plans to support the production of reliable data that can be used to meet the project's overall objectives and goals.
- Co-author scientific reports to communicate findings to project partners and other interested parties.
- Develop monitoring standard operating procedures.
- Direct field operations including scheduling field work, preparing and utilizing equipment, calibrating instruments, collecting and preparing environmental samples (including water, wastewater treatment plant effluent, sediment, fish tissue, and others) that often require the use of specialized boats, and overseeing the shipment of samples to laboratories.
- Conduct statistical analysis and quality assurance review of environmental data.
- Use various software programs, such as ArcView GIS, Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel, and statistical software packages for data interpretation, mapping, and report preparation.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Years of required experience indicated below are full-time equivalent years. Full-time equivalent experience means that any experience where working hours were less than 40 hours per week will be prorated in order to meet the equivalency of full-time. We would calculate this by looking at the total hours worked per week, divide this by 40, and then multiply by the total number of months worked. Examples of the proration calculations are:
- 30 hours worked per week for 20 months: (30/40) x 20 months = 15 months full-time equivalent
- 20 hours worked per week for 12 months: (20/40) x 12 months = 6 months full-time equivalent
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, education, and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.
Option 1:
A Bachelor’s degree with major study in environmental science, toxicology, organic chemistry, hydrology, geography, oceanography, limnology, aquatic science, fish ecology, or other closely related natural science field.
AND
Three (3) years of professional research work experience in environmental monitoring.
Option 2:
A Master’s degree with major study in environmental science, toxicology, organic chemistry, hydrology, geography, oceanography, limnology, aquatic science, fish ecology, or other closely related natural science field.
AND
One (1) year of professional research work experience in environmental monitoring.
Option 3:
A Ph.D. with major study in environmental science, toxicology, organic chemistry, hydrology, geography, oceanography, limnology, aquatic science, fish ecology, or other closely related natural science field.
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Desired Qualifications:
We highly encourage you to apply even if you do not have some (or all) of the desired experience below.
- Experience with maintenance of field equipment.
- Experience conducting water quality, toxic source identification, or stormwater sampling.
- Experience working with diverse partners and good communication skills.
