Crime Analyst

Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for maintaining radio and/or telephone communications with field units to conduct extensive computer and manual research and analysis for the collation and dissemination of crime data and for the proposal of recommendations for preventive measures. Working conditions are primarily in an office environment. Exercises no supervision.

7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday

Essential Job Functions

  • Maintains communication with field units via private channel and two- way radio.
  • Maintains confidential file system.
  • Responds to requests for information from outside law enforcement agencies.
  • Inputs crime report information into computer system and updates files with crime information.
  • Extracts pertinent data relative to criminals from computer files.
  • Receives, logs, and issues court subpoenas for unit officers.
  • Answers phones and provides information or directs callers to proper locations.
  • Updates computer files with crime information.
  • Conducts statistical analysis and interpretation of crime data.
  • Compiles various statistical reports.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Two (2) years of experience in statistical application, analysis, or law enforcement.
  • Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and Family Violence Convictions.
  • Must obtain and maintain Federal Secret Security Clearance.
    Preferred Qualifications
     
  • Prior law enforcement experience.
  • Prior experience with cases involving sexual assault investigations.
  • Familiar with Mark 43 
  • Familiar with the FBI's VICAP program and making entries into this system.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months.  One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks.  If required for the position, additional background checks may be conducted.

  • Knowledge of modern office procedures, practices, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of two-way radio operating procedures.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of file development and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of basic crime investigation techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of statistical report development procedures and techniques.
  • Skill in utilizing a personal computer and associated software programs.
  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard and other basic office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.
  • Ability to produce clear and concise reports.
