Job Description

 

 

Iowa Department of Transportation’s Mission is Making Lives Better Through Transportation. Location: Chariton Resident Construction Engineer Office
 
Work Hours: 7:45 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, hours may vary; may need to respond to emergencies and occasional travel
 
As the Chariton Transportation Engineer Associate, you’ll play a vital role by coordinating contract administration for projects throughout District 5. This team will be administering $49.9 million of projects to improve the bridges and roadway during the 2023 Construction Season which includes the following key projects:
  - Structures – On Highway 1, Little Lick Creek 1.2 mi N of S Jct IA 16
  - PCC Paving – On Highway 92, E of US 218 to 2nd St in Columbus Junction
  - Grading – On Highway 61, N of Mediapolis to 0.5 mi N of IA 78
 
You’ll work with a great team dedicated to improving Iowa roads by: 
  - inspect and coordinate construction projects ensuring work is aligned with contract documents 
  - engage and collaborate with employees to support team success  
  - act as a liaison with Iowa DOT staff, government officials, contractors, media, and the public 
  - ensure proper certification of materials including sampling, testing, and inspection
  - respond to inquiries and resolves technical issues in accordance with department policies
  - performs Resident Construction final audit process for completed projects
  - use DOT technical devices and software applications 
 
Special Requirements: Possession of an Engineer Certificate issued by the Iowa State Board of Engineering Examiners is required within 18 months of hire. Licensure as a Professional Engineer is required within 9 years of hire for continued employment as a Transportation Engineer Associate.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

 

 

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  1. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, mechanics, structural, or transportation engineering or in engineering management.
  2. Possession of a verification of graduation with major course work in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, mechanics, structural, or transportation engineering or in engineering management.

Additional Qualification Requirements

 

 

Applicants hired with verification of graduation will be required to graduate with a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university within 10 months of hire.

Within a period of time after hire, as determined by the appointing authority, employees in this class may be required to obtain one or more of the following certificates, licenses, or endorsements:

  • Certification as an engineer intern by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board
  • Licensure as a professional engineer by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board is required within 9 years for continued employment; temporary training assignments will terminate within six months following a second attempt to obtain a professional engineer license or nine years from date of hire.
