ID Research is pursuing both treatment and prevention medicines for some of the most devastating infectious diseases of today, and we are doing this by pursuing innovative approaches including targeting host (human) targets and progressing modalities that have not traditionally been pursued for ID.

Job Description:

We are seeking a talented intern with broad understanding of biological pathways and mechanisms to support our endeavor to deliver cure(s) for chronic hepatitis B and other infectious diseases. This role will provide YOU the opportunity to experience key research activities to progress YOUR career.

These responsibilities include some of the following: 

  • Design and execute experiments to determine the antiviral responses and mechanism of action of novel compounds.
  • Build capabilities to utilize high-content imaging techniques to visualize viral/host-cell markers on a subcellular level.
  • Establish and optimize fluorescence staining protocols.
  • Carry-out molecular biology assays and quantify levels of proteins using standard assays.
  • Document studies performed and present experimental results to project team members.
  • Incorporate scientific advancements in the field through literature review into experimental design and analysis.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a BS or MS in Virology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Immunology, Bioengineering, or similar disciplines. 
  • Interest in infectious diseases, virology, molecular biology, cell biology, immunology, bioengineering or a field relevant to pathogen/host interactions.
  • Strong work ethic with desire to carry out laboratory experiments under supervision.
  • Diligent record keeping in electronic laboratory notebooks.
  • Self-motivated and driven to resolve technical challenges.
  • Effective communication (both verbal and written) of scientific results.
  • Must be able to work full-time (35-40 hours/week) throughout the duration of the 6-month co-op (June - December 2024).
  • Must have an active student status and/or within 12 months post-graduation from a BS or MS degree program. Post-doctoral candidates are not eligible. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic laboratory skills such as pipetting, cell culture sterile techniques, standard molecular biology assays, and data analysis using standard software tools.
  • Hands-on experience working with microscopy in in vitro systems and/or image analysis.
  • Knowledge and experience in virology to probe disease relevant mechanisms.
  • High interest in learning drug discovery processes.

Benefits:

  • While GSK embraces a flexible work environment, we do require certain positions to be onsite. Candidates who are hired for an on-site role or hybrid role, and reside outside of 50-miles from their assigned work location, are eligible for relocation stipend. This is a one-time payment to help offset housing & relocation expenses. Please refer to the position details for the requirements of each position.
