Gender Rights Correspondent for Latin America

Are you passionate about gender equality and eager to amplify the voices of women across Latin America and the Caribbean? Latina Republic is seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as a Gender Rights Correspondent to report on the challenges and victories of gender rights in the region, through a country-by-country look in Latin America.

Why Gender Matters in Latin America: Gender inequality remains a pervasive issue in Latin America and the Caribbean, impacting women and marginalized communities in profound ways. From laws that fail to adequately protect women's rights to government inaction on issues such as femicide and LGBTQ+ discrimination, the region grapples with a wide range of challenges that hinder progress towards gender equality. Machismo, intra-family violence, economic disparities, and the alarming rates of femicides and disappearances further underscore the urgent need for action.

In Latin America, women grapple with legal constraints that encroach upon their reproductive rights, expose them to violence, and perpetuate workplace discrimination. Moreover, they confront formidable challenges in socio economic spheres, including limited access to education, employment opportunities, economic empowerment, and healthcare.

Recognizing the intersecting forms of discrimination and oppression faced by marginalized groups—such as indigenous women, Afro-Latinas, LGBTQ+ individuals, and women with disabilities—is crucial. Understanding how these multiple identities intersect to shape experiences of gender inequality is pivotal in charting a course toward a more equitable Latin America.

Equally imperative is acknowledging the gendered dimensions of environmental crises. Investigating the disparate impacts of environmental degradation, climate change, and natural disasters on communities in Latin America sheds light on the unique vulnerabilities faced by women.

Furthermore, analyzing women's political participation, representation, and leadership roles in Latin American governance, alongside the influence of feminist movements and activism on shaping gender policies and agendas, offers insight into avenues for progress. By examining gender rights through these diverse lenses, researchers and advocates can cultivate a nuanced understanding of the multifaceted challenges and opportunities for advancing gender equality in the region.

The Role: As our Gender Rights Correspondent, you will embark on a country-by-country exploration of the most pressing issues facing women and gender minorities in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Your work will involve:

• Identifying and amplifying the voices of advocates and leaders working tirelessly to advance gender equality.
• Highlighting key legislative developments, Ministry of Women’s initiatives, and nonprofit efforts aimed at addressing gender-based injustices.
• Shedding light on stories of resilience, courage, and empowerment within marginalized communities.
• Bringing attention to systemic challenges such as femicide, disappearances, and intra-family violence, while also celebrating victories and progress in the fight for gender equality along with stories of gender rights leaders.

Why These Stories Matter: By telling these stories, you will play a crucial role in raising awareness about the injustices faced by women and gender minorities in Latin America and the Caribbean. Your reporting will not only shine a light on the urgent need for change but also inspire action and solidarity among individuals and communities striving for a more just and equitable society.

• A strong passion for gender equality and social justice.
• Excellent writing and storytelling skills.
• Fluency in English and Spanish.
• Strong writing skills.
