Program Dates: 5/19/24 - 8/10/24

About us:

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, community green spaces, and much more across the country.

Program Description:

INTERN IS REQUIRED TO BE FLUENT IN SPANISH.
Intern leads informal interpretation to educate the public about Water Safety and Leave No Trace. In the past ten years Gateway NRA has had more than 20 visitor related drownings park–wide, however the program over the past five years has helped to reduce that number to zero on the bay beaches in the park.  Interns educate visitors in both English and Spanish about the dangers of swimming in non-guarded beaches and how to recognize characteristics of water depth, changes in currents & tides, and man-made hazards in the water.  Interns will provide instruction to visitors about what to do when encountering danger in the water and how to get help. Interns promote and educate the public about Water Safety and Leave No Trace through photos and videos to be posted on park social media forums and the park website.

The intern will assist the park rangers with all water-based programs and events, such as canoeing, seining, Junior Ranger programs, Latino Conservation Weekend and World Oceans Day. The park intern is responsible for documenting visitor contacts daily and provide a season-end program report to the supervisor.  Interns are required to use a bicycle to travel within the park. This position is supervised by the Division of Interpretation and the Park Unit Manager.
