Post Doctoral Fellow

Job Description Summary:

The Post-Doctoral Fellow is expected to support the mental health of students through individual and group counseling, outreach/programming, and consultation. The Post-Doctoral Fellow will participate in the on-call duty rotation and the Pre-College summer program as needed. This position will provide crisis intervention and crisis walk-in services for students. This position is supervised by the Director of Health Services, and Post-docs actively participate in all relevant agency services, which provide opportunities not only for carrying out major professional functions but also for close contact with our staff. As staff members, we view post-docs as valued colleagues-in-training; as such, post-docs are treated with a high degree of professional as well as personal respect.

Primary functions include direct service activities with an emphasis on professional development and evidence-based service provision. Fellows will focus on individual therapy, facilitating groups, crisis evaluation via walk-in appointments and after hours on-call consultations, working in collaboration with psychiatry services. Interventions will be guided with a lens of multicultural competence. Further expectations would be campus outreach, consultation projects, and working as a member of the team through weekly staff meeting and individual supervision.

Clinical Support:
1. Provides intake assessment and individual/group psychotherapy within a brief framework.
2. In cases of referral to off campus counseling agencies/hospital, provide complete follow through and after care assistance to students.
3. Assure confidentiality of the student and liability protection of the College through appropriate record keeping.
4. Provide timely and accurate documentation or rendered services.
5. Shares emergency on-call duties with colleagues throughout the entire academic year and during the Pre-College summer program.
6. Participate in Counseling Center staff clinical review meetings and consult with psychiatrist regarding shared cases.
7. Performs other duties as assigned.

Outreach and Programming:
1. Engage in a consultation project within Center or with another College department.
2. Work on Orientation programs and RA collaboration.
3. Engage in monthly outreach and programming through the PCC or in conjunction with another campus group.
4. Leads one large outreach program a semester.
5. Attend Student Life Programming meetings.
6. Assists in the training of various professional and paraprofessional staff and student support groups in need of instruction in crisis intervention, communication skills, referral process, etc.
7. Attends Student Life Department Staff meetings.

Administration:
1. Model sensitivity to diversity and international populations.
2. Timely completion of paperwork for meetings and documentation.
3. When necessary work with Student Life to complete mandated assessments such as alcohol assessments and mental status checks.
4. Provides consultation services to all faculty and staff on matters dealing with the distressing student, assessment of behavior and the referral process.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITIES:
1. Ability to work well with a diverse population of college age students, parents, faculty, and staff.
2. Excellent organizational and communications skills, both written and verbal.
3. Ability to maintain complete confidentiality.
4. Openness to working as part of a team and willingness to grow as a clinician.

Education And Experience

Minimum:
• Successful completion of the doctoral internship at an accredited site towards obtaining a Psy.D. or Ph.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology.
• Must be in an APA accredited program for which their degree is issued. This position is meant to serve as a year-long placement to aid in the necessary licensed supervision towards licensure requirements for independent practice.

Preferred:
• Completion of dissertation for Doctoral applicants.
• Previous experience in a college counseling center or outpatient mental health setting.
• Demonstrated experience in providing brief therapy, crisis intervention, group therapy, outreach, care coordination and case management.
