The Putney School has a full-time, seasonal opening for a paid Farm Intern to begin work around May 15 until approximately October 15, 2024. The schedule will start at around 40 hours a week and will increase up to 50 hours per week as the season progresses. This position provides broad exposure to the joys and responsibilities of working on an integrated farm, including working in the garden, dairy barn, and haying fields; as well as exposure to working with high-school aged students in farm activities. 

Responsibilities:

  • Principal responsibility will be to work with the garden crew, which includes direct seeding, weeding, watering, hoeing, and harvesting of crops, as well as coordinating crop donations with local food shelves.
  • Regular participation in barn chores, including milking and feeding cows, cleaning stalls, and other barn support as needed.
  • Facilitate afternoon garden activities with students while programs are in session.
  • Participate in other farm projects as needed, such as tractor work, haying, using hand tools, loading and unloading supplies, hay, crops, etc.

Qualifications: 

  • Completion of a college degree, preferably in agriculture or food studies.
  • Some farm experience is required (training will be provided as needed).
  • Experience working with teens would be an asset.
  • Ability and willingness to work early morning, late evening, and weekend shifts on a regular basis in a variety of weather conditions and ability to endure sustained physical labor required.
  • Ability to pass a criminal-background check and authorization to work in the United States are required.
