Internship - Developed Recreation Intern

About us: 
The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and young adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, and community green spaces across the country.

Program Description:
The interns will support the Rocky Mountain Ranger District Developed Recreation Program on the Helena – Lewis and Clark National Forest. We are located near Choteau and Augusta, MT, and the interns will assist with our summer program of work. The recreation interns will perform campground, trailhead, and rental cabin maintenance in the area of the National Forest that is somewhat roaded. Interns will be supplied with a government pickup and would be driving most days to the forest to work and most of the time be working independently with guidance from the lead Recreation Technician. Interns are required to work 5 days a week with Tuesdays and Wednesdays being their days off. All developed recreation staff are required to work all federal holidays as public visitation is up around those days.

The main tasks for this internship are making visitor contacts, conveying info concerning applicable rules and regulations, answering forest user questions, doing the required daily maintenance in campgrounds, trailheads and dispersed campsites,  and  being the eyes and ears of the Forest Service in regards to wrong doings that occasionally occur on forest lands. There are also bi-weekly foot patrols to two heavily used wilderness locations for the purpose of providing Forest Service presence and ensuring user compliance.

Member Qualifications: 

  • Driver's license
  • Personal vehicle recommended.
  • Physical fitness required.


Additional: 
Must be eligible to serve as an AmeriCorps Member. This includes:  

  • Being a citizen, permanent resident, or national of the United States.
  • Being at least 18 years or older.
  • Having a high school diploma or equivalent;
  • Being willing to undergo National Service Criminal History Check, including criminal background, sex offender and FBI checks.
