Indigenous Archivist Intern - Labriola National American Indian Data Center at Arizona State University Library

The Labriola National American Indian Data Center at ASU Library seeks an intern interested in gaining experience as an Indigenous Archivist or Archivist committed to supporting Indigenous-led information management. The internship will focus on Indigenous-informed archival stewardship practices and procedures that support the implementation of the Protocols of Native American Archival Materials throughout the ASU Library department. The internship is open to a hybrid (remote and in-person) option. 

The intern will be working with the Librarian/Archivist such as:

  • Assist in the archive collection review and assessment to adhere to the Protocols of Native American Archival Materials
  • May assist with reparative and rehousing of Indigenous archival collections to adhere to Protocols of Native American Archival Materials
  • Collaborate or participate in the working group of ASU Curators to communicate Labriola’s missions and procedures.
  • Develop and update Labriola’s LibGuides.

 

Learning Objectives

  • Gain practical experience in the management of Indigenous Information.
  • Gain collaborative experience in an academic library environment.
  • Develop critical analysis skills and competencies in the review of scholarly and archive collections relating to Indigenous Peoples.
  • Understand the basics of Protocols for Native American Archival Material for library collections.
  • Develop intercultural fluency skills that best promote the Protocols for Native American Archival Material within a non-Indigenous library department.

 

Skills Required

  • Enrolled in a Master of Library Science, Information, Archive studies program
  • Knowledge of Indigenous archival practices and care, such as the Protocols for Native American Archival Materials
  • Knowledge of Indigenous Peoples of Arizona and/or Southwest
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

 

Location: This is a hybrid position. Occasional travel to ASU's Hayden Library, Tempe campus may be required. https://lib.asu.edu/locations/hayden

This position is open to students currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLS program. Recent graduates will also be considered. Course credit is available for students in accredited MLS programs.
