Data Science & AI Research Summer Internship

The Connecticut Green Bank (hereafter "Green Bank") is seeking its first-ever Intern focused on data science and artificial intelligence (“AI”) research for summer 2024. 

We are a quasi-public authority and the nation’s first state-level “Green Bank,” leveraging public funds to increase and accelerate private investment in the green economy of Connecticut. Working at the Green Bank means being part of a dynamic team of talented people who are passionate about implementing the green bank model, stimulating the growth and development of clean energy and environmental infrastructure investment in Connecticut, and growing our economy, strengthening our communities, and protecting our environment. 

We are seeking a currently matriculated student in, or recent graduate of, a computer science, data science, or related undergraduate or graduate degree program to match their academic work with professional work experience. The intern will work alongside our Data & Impact team on a variety of initiatives as the Green Bank explores AI and machine learning (“ML”). Preference will be given to candidates demonstrating curriculum, research, and/or practical experience in these areas.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Individual responsibilities will include:

  • Developing a minimum viable product for an AI tool. Examples include:
    • Developing a chatbot using natural language processing techniques to answer questions about one or more Green Bank programs;
    • Creating a system monitoring and fault detection model for the Green Bank’s solar fleet using machine learning algorithms;
  • Assisting in strategic planning for the use and adoption of AI and ML at the Green Bank;
  • Collaborating with the Green Bank’s internal AI Committee to assess the organization’s readiness to achieve items on the existing AI/ML project list;
  • Conducting research on emerging AI and ML techniques and their potential applications in the clean energy and nature-based solutions sectors;
  • Preparing research reports and presentations related to AI and ML projects and initiatives at the Green Bank; and,
  • Related duties as required. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

The following minimum qualifications in knowledge, skill, and ability are required:

  • Current matriculation in, or recent graduate of, a computer science, data science, or related degree program with a focus on AI and ML;
  • Strong programming skills in languages such as Python or R;
  • Experience with various machine learning techniques including classical machine learning, neutral networks, and large language models;
  • Familiarity with natural language processing and chatbot development;
  • Knowledge of data analysis, visualization, and statistical modeling;
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills;
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, innovative environment;
  • Passion for clean energy, sustainability, and the application of AI and ML in combating climate change.

EMPLOYMENT DETAILS:

  • This position reports to the Manager of Data & Impact.
  • It is expected that the position will be based in the Green Bank’s Hartford, CT or Stamford, CT offices, with opportunities for some remote work. 
  • This is a full-time (40 hour/week) internship for 10-12 weeks between May – August 2024.
  • Expected hourly pay is $25, but the final hourly rate will be commensurate with experience, skills, and qualifications.
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. for the duration of the position.
