Summer Co-op/Discovery DMPK
Department Description:
GlaxoSmithKline US discovery Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics (DMPK)/Sample Management organization is responsible for delivery of key DMPK and sample management support (in vitro, pharmacokinetic, bioanalytical, sample management) to help drive early drug discovery programs. Within that structure, the Discovery Sample Management team is responsible for managing and distributing of GSK proprietary small molecule collection with focus on automation and software to ensure we deliver highest quality result with a rapid turnaround. Our key processes generate high throughput data and metrics, as part of streamlining, we want to explore opportunities to automate and to optimize these metrics which will require development of novel IT approaches to enhance visualization.
Job Description:
This position will allow the selected candidate to:
- Develop data visualization tools for existing and new key performance indicators and score cards through charts, graphs and dashboards
- Work closely with staff to understand all the data source and tables and existing queries
- Automate the creation of these visualizations
- Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns in complex large data sets
- Develop metrics report web-based dashboard
- Work with management to prioritize business and information needs
- Locate and define new process improvement opportunities
- Prepare reports and presentations to communicate the insights and findings from the data to management
- Collaborate and engage with other Discovery DMPK lines to understand their data needs and requirements for analysis projects tailored to their unique business process
- Be ‘exposure’ to state of the art automation labs
Minimum Qualifications:
- Pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Information Management/Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, or similar disciplines.
- Good understanding in scripting and programing language (i.e. VBA, Python, C++, etc.).
- Good knowledge with reporting packages (Business Objects etc), databases (SQL etc), programming (XML, Javascript, or ETL frameworks).
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Adept at queries, report writing and presenting findings.
- Able to work full-time (35-40 hours/week) throughout the 6 month co-op (June - December 2024).
- Must have an active student status and/or within 12 months post-graduation from a BS or MS degree program. Post-doctoral candidates are not eligible.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Basic understanding of Drug Metabolism, Pharmacokinetic, or Bioanalytical principles
- Experience with Spotfire visual analytics tool
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel

Candidates who are hired for an on-site role or hybrid role, and reside outside of 50-miles from their assigned work location, are eligible for relocation stipend.
