IU School of Medicine Student Medical Education (MSE) is looking for a Communications Assistant to help us execute marketing campaigns and design supporting assets. This role will assist in MSE’s communications initiatives, including two weekly email newsletters, social media, video/blogs, and more.  This part-time (10-20 hours a week) work-study student position will provide you with hands-on experience in the field of internal communications.  The pay rate for this position is $13.00 an hour.

Core Responsibilities

  • Social Media Content Management: Assist in creating video and social media content (primarily on Instagram).
  • IUSM Event Coverage:  Attend IUSM events as needed. This may include ‘covering’ an event for the purposes of blog and social media content.
  • Writing:  Proofread/edit the weekly newsletters and other content as required.
  • Editing: Help with editing and execution of mailings, interdepartmental communications, external communications, and email communications.
  • Marketing Communication:  Monitor relevant social media and respond to communication inquiries by providing information and explaining procedures.
  • Maintain Data:  May assist with the accuracy of mailing and distribution lists; make regular updates as there are staffing and/or process changes.
  • Planning and preparation:  Prepare reports, communications timelines, and calendars, and monitor the progress of communications toward relevant deadlines.
  • Other duties:  Assistance on other projects or activities as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Registered IU-Indianapolis student with a GPA of 2.5 or above.
  • High degree of professionalism, with the ability to work within guidelines, manage time efficiently, set priorities, meet deadlines, and respond well to constructive criticism.
  • Commitment to high-quality content that is accurate and engaging.
  • Eagerness to learn new skills.
  • Intermediate knowledge of video. Video editing experience is a plus.
  • Fluent in social media, including trends, caption writing, brand voice and identity, etc.
  • Available to work 15 hours a week. (Occasionally up to 20) On Campus hours are between 8 am-3 pm.  There will be Friday mandatory hours.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Storytelling ability: understand the basics of storytelling and narrative, communicating to specific audiences, scriptwriting, etc. Emphasis on digital storytelling.
  • Interviewing skills: able to ask good open-ended questions that elicit responses, and, if necessary, pivot in an interview with good follow-up questions if the responses warrant. The ability to take notes quickly is helpful.
  • Outgoing, curious personality who enjoys meeting new people and isn’t shy about approaching with questions.
  • Eagerness to learn new skills, software, hardware, etc.
  • Knowledge of basic grammar and syntax. AP Style background is a plus.
  • Team player with the ability to adapt to a variety of tasks.
