Housing & Residence Life: Summer Maintenance & Operation Assistant

Position Description :

This dynamic student employment position assists in Housing & Residence Life summer operations. This position is responsible for the successful operation of the 3 residence halls used to house overnight conference guests, interns, and summer school students. This position description serves as an overview of Housing & Residence Life’s expectations for both new and returning summer maintenance and operations assistants. 

Supervision Received:

 Works with the full-time maintenance staff, but supervised by the Associate Director of Housing & Residence Life.

Position Tasks (and corresponding NACE Career Readiness Competencies)

 

Oral and Written Communication:

  • Provide positive and accurate interaction and guest relations to all residents and guests entering the office and residential environments. Interact with individuals via telephone or in-person.
  • Administrative tasks include, but are not limited to, assisting professional staff members in responding to guests concerns, room assignments, processing correspondence, answering and responding to telephone calls; using housing computer program/database, assisting with key management, distributing University announcements/publicity, maintain and file records, and process maintenance and custodial work orders.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of linen and distribute to clients as requested by contract.
  • Conduct annual inventory of equipment and furniture.

Critical Thinking/ Problem Solving:

  • Provide maintenance services during the end of the year clean-up.
  • Provide general tasks and functions for summer conference operations including room turnover and room preparation (linen distribution and collection, vacuuming, dusting, emptying trash) after each conference.
  • Conduct simple maintenance services in the residence halls including building maintenance, lawn maintenance, painting, and other maintenance duties as assigned.
  • Room set up as required by each conference.
  • Conduct property and room walkthroughs and provide room inspection information to Program Assistant in Residence Life after each conference.
  • Other projects as assigned.

 

Qualifications Required:

  • Qualified applicants must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs Must be able to walk 5 Flights of Stairs and Walk a minimum of 400 yards.
  • Able to handle light machinery (i.e. hand-held tools and mechanical equipment).
  • Must be able to handle frequent bending, kneeling, and reaching.
  • Applicants should be able to work periods of eight hours during opening and closing with only small breaks and time for lunch.
  • Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0.
  • Must be available to work 25-40 hours per week between 7-3:30PM, Monday – Friday with some overtime and weekend work required. Hours flexible around class schedule.
  • Must be available from Monday, May 13, 2024-Tuesday, September 3, 2024.

 Qualifications Preferred:

  • Experience with maintenance type work preferred.

Starting Wage: 

  • $11.00 per hour based on experience.
