Community Technology Support Assistant - Summer 2024 - Work Study or Regular Pay

Intergenerational Technology Services (IGeTs) at UW-Whitewater, a community technology support program in which students teach older adults basic skills on how to use technology and help them problem-solve their digital devices, is hiring English speaking and Spanish speaking/Bilingual students!

Multiple positions are available for summer 2024,  with need for students to start May 20, 2024 or shortly thereafter. The positions are housed at UW-W’s Community Engagement Center, which is located just 6-short blocks from campus. Students must be able to work a minimum 4 hours per week with a maximum of 25 hours. Window of work hours is 8am – 2pm Monday – Friday. Hourly pay rate is $14. Interviews will start immediately.

Job Summary: Students will assist IGeTS staff with delivery of group-based technology instruction classes delivered to older adults, provide one-on-one technology assistance with personal devices (e.g., smartphone, tablet, smart medical device, automobile technology), support telehealth visits (e.g., visits with healthcare providers and mental/behavioral health providers), assist with check in and registration process and greet older adults consumers, and assist with administrative tasks as needed. This position requires students have a basic level understanding of how to use technology and passion for helping others learn how to use it for social good!

Specific tasks, include, but are not limited to:

Assist with Group Based Technology

  • monitor delivery of content
  • assist consumers by providing instructional or verbal guidance on content
  • provide one-on-one instruction on how to do something taught in group-based class

Provide One-on-One Technology Assistance with Personal Devices

 identify and resolve issues that prevent user from successfully using device, e.g,

  • software update needed
  • browser out of date

 Teach user how to use device to get desired outcomes, e.g.,

  • how to use FaceTime to engage with family/friends
  • how to download electronic tickets for Warhawks football game on their phone
  • how to connect phone to Bluetooth in their car
  • how to use applications on their phone or tablet
  • how to connect a smart medical device to Bluetooth

Support Telehealth Visits

  • assist with logging into patient portal systems
  • show how to use web-camera and/or microphone to engage with healthcare provider
  • other support as needed

Assist with Check-in Process

  • be present at front desk and register/check-in consumer
  • greet existing and new consumers and provide information about IGeTS
  • invites consumers to complete intake or exit survey

Assist with Administrative Tasks

  • making phone calls to consumers or constituents to remind or inform about services
  • photocopying
  • inputting consumer information into a database
  • inputting survey information into a database

Required Skills

  • Basic understanding of how to use technology to find information and goods and services, and engage with others and activities (e.g., play computer games)
  • General knowledge of word processing and other computer programs (e.g., Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Experience using the internet to problem-solve and locate information such as goods and services
  • Comfort interacting with older adults and persons over the age of 50 of all ability levels
  • Ability to work as part of a team that includes staff, students, and community volunteers
