Upward Bound Math-Science Tutor-Counselor

Upward Bound Tutor-Counselors are responsible for planning and implementing dynamic, engaging, and rigorous Summer Component activities for participants, supporting at least one major course subject, assisting the respective faculty member, and supervising participants’ residential and student life activities. 

The Upward Bound Tutor-Counselors are assigned to support summer courses, and assist faculty members; they may help to facilitate occasional lessons, and will encourage and support progress in the academic courses being taught. 

Tutor-Counselors assist with classroom management, attendance, tutoring student groups and related duties. They are responsible for communicating regularly with faculty about student progress, homework assignments, labs and assessments.

Upward Bound T/Cs prepare daily and weekly recreational activity schedules in conjunction with the program director and senior staff, and lead and facilitate the activities, workshops and recreational events that complement the participants’ academic experience. 

They attend daily T/C staff meetings to plan and schedule activities to support student academic and personal progress. They participate in staff meetings each week to confer with faculty and staff about overall program planning and student progress. They collaborate in planning enriching student activities throughout the summer. 

T/Cs are responsible for supervising key aspects of student life, including residential life and safety during the day and overnight and on field trips; curfews, health and safety protocols; upholding all program rules and policies at all times; implementing program disciplinary procedures; upholding Noble and Greenough regulations and UMass Boston employee policies; and communicating student and other program concerns directly and in a timely fashion to the program director. 

Hours: the residential schedule runs from Sunday early evening to Friday early afternoon each week, and includes weekly in-person field trip supervision, and overnight “on call” and supervisory duties while in residence. 

 

Dates: July 1 - August 9. Orientation dates will consist of two days during the weeks preceding the program start. The final program week will include a multi-day college tour trip. 

Supervision is provided by the Upward Bound Math-Science Program Director and Associate Director. 

 

Qualifications:

Applicants must have a strong academic background in one or more of the following subject areas: English I-IV; Math-Geometry, Algebra II/Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus/Calculus; Science-Biology, Chemistry, Physics; Foreign Language-French, Spanish; Computer Science or History. 

Applicants should have at least completed the sophomore level in college; Bachelor's degree preferred, in one of the above subject areas. Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English.

Candidates should have experience leading/facilitating workshops and recreational activities, collaborating on team-building and group event development, and supervising or coaching youth. 

Previous teaching, tutoring and/or advising experience with secondary school students and diverse urban youth preferred; experience working with and collaborating well with a diverse team, ability to support/assist a lead instructor, ability to supervise and uphold program rules and regulations.

Some experience providing college counseling, workshops, presentations and/or direct services in a secondary educational or social service environment, knowledge of college and financial aid application processes, financial literacy, and career exploration, preferred. 

Experience and knowledge regarding instructional technology, video and computer teaching tools and platforms such as Google Classroom, Zoom, computer applications, presentation software and other instructional tools preferred.

Prior TRIO Program experience and experience successfully overcoming barriers to higher education similar to those experienced by the program students is preferred.

Candidates should ideally possess the following qualities: patience, ability to work as part of a team, ability to follow directions and enforce regulations, honesty, reliability, maturity and compassion. 

Applicants should be in possession of a valid US driver’s license, and preferably be age 21 or older, with the ability to occasionally operate rental vehicles or small school vans, as needed, to transport students. 

 

Job Requirements:

Must be able to work a flexible schedule, depending on program needs. The Summer Component will be in-person and residential. Must be able to commit to working a set schedule for six weeks during the summer component, plus orientation days. 

 

Compensation: $3600 (includes room and board, during program residency).
