Migrant Education Program Services Coordinator VISTA

Term Date: March and April Start Dates for Year-Long Positions

Location: Concord, NH

Focus Area: Community Outreach, Youth

Work with migrant education students to determine if we are providing adequate services to support their ability to learn English and attend college or find gainful employment. Nontraditional position with adventure-filled days in the field that lead to more equitable outcomes.

According to the US Department of Education “The goal of the Migrant Education Program is to ensure that all migrant students reach challenging academic standards and graduate with a high school diploma (or complete a HSED) that prepares them for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment” (https://results.ed.gov/).

The community that the AmeriCorps VISTA member will be serving are migrant students and out-of-school-youths regionally located throughout New Hampshire. According to the National Center for Farmworker Health, 44% of migratory farmworkers reported an income below poverty thresholds (https://www.ncfh.org/naws-fact-sheet.html). In addition, migratory farmworkers often have no health insurance benefits, paid leave, pensions, workers’ compensation benefits, overtime pay, life insurance or other benefits. Migrant students often have insecure housing and interrupted education.

The Migrant Education Program in New Hampshire is housed in the Division of Learner Supports within the Bureau of Instructional Support, and “The mission of this bureau is to improve the achievement of students by providing educational leadership through accountability and academics. As authorized by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act, this Bureau also provides technical assistance and professional development opportunities in the implementation of federal grant programs through the Office of ESEA Title Programs” (https://www.education.nh.gov/who-we-are/division-of-learner-support/bureau-of-instructional-support).

The AmeriCorps VISTA member will support the Migrant Education Program through identifying and responding to the needs of our identified migrant students. The VISTA Migrant Education Program Services Coordinator will build knowledge in the greater community about our work, identify the needs of eligible migrant students and their families, assess to what extent current services are meeting migrant student needs, and make recommendations to improve service delivery. Specifically, the member will create and/or maintain a bilingual digital communication strategy; as well as compile, analyze, and share out stakeholder feedback. The member will assist with needs assessments, interpretation, and community outreach.
