Safety Instructor - Work Study

Job requirements for all Campus Recreation positions:

  • Student workers are only able to work up to 19 hours/week while classes are in session. (Applies to all positions worked on-campus).
  • Attend mandatory meetings, trainings, and in-services.
  • Follow and enforce all Campus Recreation policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of and ability to promote Campus Recreation programs.
  • Serve as an integral role in the Campus Recreation Emergency Action Plan (EAP).
  • Possess excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to work well with a diverse, inclusive recreation team.
  • Ability to work well with a diverse participant and patron community.
  • Must be in good academic standing with the University.
  • Must be in good conduct standing with the University.

Summary of Safety Instructor Responsibilities:

Safety Instructors are responsible for teaching American Red Cross (ARC) CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer with First Aid training courses and ARC review courses, facilitating red shirt drills, and assisting with department safety training.  

Primary Duties - Teaching ARC courses:

  • Ensure the safety of all participants
  • Provide a safe, friendly, and inclusive learning environment
  • Prepare detailed lesson plans for each class and follow the prescribed American Red Cross curriculum
  • Be prepared by having equipment and classroom ready prior to class time
  • Conduct lessons according to American Red Cross guidelines and within the policies, procedures, and philosophy of Campus Recreation
  • Act as an ambassador of the Risk Management Committee and the department by being visible and friendly
  • Communicate effectively and efficiently with the Coordinator of Aquatics and Facility Operations other instructors and participants
  • Control on-site equipment inventory
  • Clean and disinfect all equipment after completion of course
  • Complete all required records and submit them to the Assistant Director of Facility Operations and Aquatics within two days after class

Primary Duties - Facilitating Red Shirt Drills (RSDs)

  • Assist with creating a schedule for program area specific RSDs.
  • Facilitate RSDs to include advance preparation, equipment set-up, delivery of RSD, staff development, documentation, and break down.
  • Clean and disinfect all equipment after completion.
  • Assist with creating new and creative RSDs specific for program areas.

 

Minimum Qualifications for Considerations:

  • Must have current American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Certification or American Heart Association First Aid/CPR/AED Certification (condition of hire)
  • Must obtain American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Certification within the first semester of employment, (condition of employment)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA):

  • Possess excellent customer service skills and able to work well with others
  • Dedicated to safety and helping others improve in their skills

Interview Dates for the Safety Instructor

April 1-4th

If hired, you must attend

  • In-person pre-hire form: 30 minutes
  • In-person on-boarding at Human Resources: 2 hours
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification course: 4 online hours and 4 hours in-person
  • Mandatory department new hire training: 2 hours
  • Mandatory area new hire training: 3-10 hours

Hiring requirements all Campus Recreation positions

  • Must be a student at Texas A&M University-Commerce that is currently enrolled or pre-registered in classes holding at least part-time status of 6 hours for undergraduate and 3 hours for graduate.
  • Must pass State of Texas background check.
