Lifeguard certification is not required in order to apply. If you have a certification, please make sure to list it in your resume.

As a part of the in-person interview, we will be assessing the applicant's swimming capabilities. The applicant must:

  • Have a swimsuit.
  • Be able to swim 100 meters (two laps) continuously, utilizing either front crawl or breaststroke
  • Be able to retrieve a brick - Swim one length of the pool, go down 3 feet, retrieve a 10lb brick from the bottom of the pool, and swim it back to the start in under 50 seconds.
  • Be able to tread water for 2 minutes without using your hands and touching the bottom of the pool

As a condition of hire, you must attend and pass an American Red Cross Shallow Water Lifeguard Course. This course is being offered in person from April 18,19, & 20th. There are no additional costs to take this course. 

If you are not able to pass the in-person skills tests interview and attend this course, then you cannot be hired. 

Interview dates/times: Now - September 8. Interviews are in person.

If hired, you must attend:

  • April 1-4: Interviews
  • Lifeguard Course: April 18,19,20th
  • April 23 and 24: Department Orientation

Hiring requirements for all Campus Recreation positions

  • Must be a student at Texas A&M University-Commerce who is currently enrolled or pre-registered in classes holding at least part-time status of 6 hours for undergraduate and 3 hours for graduate.
  • Must pass State of Texas background check

 

Job requirements for all Campus Recreation positions

  • Student workers can only work up to 19 hours/week while classes are in session. (This applies to all positions worked on campus.)
  • Attend mandatory meetings, training, and in-services
  • Follow and enforce all Campus Recreation policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of and ability to promote Campus Recreation programs
  • Serve as an integral role in the Campus Recreation Emergency Action Plan (EAP)
  • Possess excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to work well with members of the A&M-Commerce Community
  • Must be in good academic standing with the University
  • Must be in good conduct standing with the University

Summary of Responsibilities:

The lifeguard position monitors and ensures patrons' safety in the Great OutRoars facility’s pool, spa, basketball courts, and outdoor seating areas.

Supervision: Coordinator of Aquatics and Facility Operations

Starting Pay rate: $12/hour

Hours/Week: Up to 19 hrs a week during the semester

Level: Entry

Primary Duties:

  • Enforce all Great OutRoars, Campus Recreation, and University policies and procedures
  • Maintain facility cleanliness and safety
  • Activate facility Emergency Action Plan (EAP) when necessary and provide appropriate care
  • Perform American Red Cross lifeguarding life-saving rescues
  • Perform other duties as assigned
