Washington DC - 2024 Entry Level Legal Assistant

Legal assistants are essential to the quality of services the firm provides its clients. Legal assistants, under the supervision of an attorney, are encouraged to assume significant responsibilities while they work on specific matters. Similar to attorneys, legal assistants are assigned to specific practice areas to develop expertise in an area and closer working relationships with their colleagues.

 

Successful applicants must have a four-year degree with a minimum GPA of 3.3 and an outstanding academic record, leadership ability as demonstrated through extracurricular activities or work experience and excellent interpersonal, communication and writing skills. Additionally, they must be well-organized, detail-oriented, able to simultaneously manage multiple tasks, and possess good judgement and the highest ethical standards.

Legal assistants work under the supervision and direction of an attorney. Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

 

Litigation:

  • Work closely with the attorneys on litigation, arbitration, investigation, compliance an antitrust matters
  • Aid in preparation for trials, arbitrations, depositions, client meetings and presentations
  • Coordination of set-up of logistics for trials, hearings and arbitrations; attend and assist at said proceedings with related off-site travel as needed
  • Assist with document reviews and preparation of document productions, witness kits, and privilege logs
  • Assist with the preparation, coordination of, court filings in accordance with federal and local rules, and of tribunal submissions
  • Monitor, organize and maintain central records of files, including case pleadings, correspondence, discovery and research
  • Manage case calendars, prepare and maintain various case trackers, and actively monitor case correspondence for updates and developments
  • Conduct research and prepare case-books utilizing Bloomberg, Lexis, Westlaw, Pacer, etc.
  • Assist with the preparation of legal documents, correspondence and memoranda; notarize documents as needed
  • Cite-check, Bluebook, Shepardize, and proofread briefs; prepare tables of contents and authorities; assemble exhibits
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned

 

Shearman & Sterling’s compensation is merit-based. The annual salary for this role is $55,000.00, and the role is eligible for overtime. The annual salary listed is just one component of Sherman & Sterling’s total compensation and benefits package which includes a discretionary bonus, paid leave, life, health, accident, and disability insurance; and a 401(k) plan.
