Individual Giving Specialist

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society mobilizes people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS. To fulfill this mission, the Society funds cutting-edge research, drives change through advocacy, facilitates professional education, collaborates with MS organizations around the world, and provides programs and services designed to help people with MS and their families move their lives forward. We partner with volunteers to accomplish our work. Staff members engage volunteers through effective and timely communications, facilitating meaningful opportunities, and continually seeking and providing feedback for reciprocal growth and learning.

Active Portfolio Management (50% of time)

  • Manage defined pipeline of new and retained donors through meaningful interactions and execution of appropriate relationship building steps to increase Individual Giving revenue and identify and develop major donor targets.
  • Actively identify top relationships within portfolio to strategically align moves management plans to grow giving to donor’s highest capacity.
  • Regularly research, qualify and assign donors to portfolio through defined processes to determine individuals with capacity and propensity.
  • Engage with donors in a variety of ways to identify specific donor interests and deepen their connection to the organization. This includes but is not limited to reaching weekly donor phone call goals, visit chapter territories to host donor meetings or intimate events.
  • Drive collaboration with Individual Giving Staff and Chapter Presidents, as well as key chapter volunteers to identify, cultivate and solicit donors.
  • Represent Individual Giving in chapter relationship management meetings to facilitate collaboration and develop donor engagement strategies cross functionally.
  • Travel as needed to Society events and act as representative of the Individual Giving team.

 

Mid-Level Gift Stewardship (20% of time)

  • Steward all donor gifts at $1,000-$2,499 through timely outreach to donors after contribution.
  • Ensure all stewardship touches are accurately captured in donor account records.
  • Personally invite donors to Society hosted events and encourage participation.
  • Send regular personalized updates to donors on impact of their support on a cadence that compliments centralized Society communications.

 

Pipeline Generation (20% of time)

  • Contact assigned proactive prospects to determine their interest in a deeper relationship with the Society.
  • Actively pursue new leads, in collaboration with the Senior Manager, Individual Giving – Acquisition and Growth.
  • Qualify new leads for portfolios utilizing established qualification parameters.
  • Identify individuals with exceptional affinity, access and ability as potential pipeline opportunities and transition to higher level portfolios.

 

Special Projects (10% of time)

  • Supports additional special projects as deemed necessary by leadership. This may include the Society's tribute giving programs or other fundraising support projects.
     

Minimum Qualifications 

2 or more years of nonprofit fundraising or sales experience required, nonprofit experience preferred. Time management, relationship management, data management, organization, communication, and collaboration skills required.  Ability and confidence to communicate with prospects and donors is essential.

  • Must be an action-oriented, results-driven, curious, adaptable professional with experience building donor relationships
  • Must have high emotional intelligence, excellent listening skills, and passion for the mission as well as be skilled at inspiring, influencing, and engaging people
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with attention to detail in both internal and external communications
  • Collaborative and accessible as a colleague, with ability to work independently as well as part of a team to move initiatives and work forward
  • Desire and ability to stay informed about recent advances related to the MS movement as well as Society initiatives, progress and engagement opportunities for sharing with donors
  • Knowledge of industry standards, current trends, and best practices in mid-level fundraising
  • Highly organized, with processes for tending to competing priorities and tight deadlines
  • Understanding of the donor lifecycle and how to apply it to a portfolio
  • Strong relationship building skills, diplomacy and discretion
  • Motivated individual who can deliver on goals
  • Ability to quickly build credibility within and outside of the organization and make an immediate contribution to accomplishing key priorities
  • Creative and energetic individual who functions well within a fast-paced team environment, which includes cross-department collaboration
  • Ability to work well with volunteers, staff, and a variety of constituents
  • Outstanding customer experience capabilities

 

Technical/Other 

  • Strong computer skills:  MS Office XP – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams
  • Experience with Salesforce (preferred) or equivalent CRM database
  • Database management and prospect research skills a plus
  • Experience and comfort using Microsoft Teams or equivalent for meetings and presentations

 

Compensation and Benefits Info:

The estimated hiring compensation range for this role is $48,000 - $60,000.  Final offers will be based on the candidate's geographic location and consider career experience and may vary from this range due to these and other factors.
