QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification Required:
- Master's Degree from accredited college or university (for individuals certified after 1/23/01)

FUNCTION:
The Library Media Specialist/School Librarian (LMSISL), a certified librarian, is a manager who plans, acquires, organizes, directs, coordinates, reports, and budgets for the library program to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information, enabling them to be lifelong readers and learners. The LMS/SL develops and maintains the library collection, circulates materials makes library resources available to students and staff, and works collaboratively with teachers toward common instructional goals. The LMS/SL works under the supervision of the campus principal.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & REQUIREMENTS:
- Selects, organizes, and integrates resources in the establishment of a quality, library media program that encourages students to make meaningful connections between classroom learning and information skills.
- Offers open circulation/access to library resources; classes scheduled at time of instructional need for a suitable length of time.
- Provides an attractive, inviting, and stimulating atmosphere for information users.
- Meets community expectations through involvement with parent organizations, attendance or presentations at parent or community meetings, and dialogs with parent volunteers.
- Provides displays of student work.
- Integrates skills outlined in the ''Technology Applications" of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) into all curriculum areas to make meaningful connections between classroom learning and information skills.
- Collaboratively plans and cooperatively teams with classroom teachers to utilize library resources and to develop research skills as needed to support the Scope and Sequence document across the curriculum.
- Participate in/on campus curriculum planning, technology initiatives, campus decision-making teams, textbook selection committees, and Library Selection and Screening Committee as an essential resource.
- Creates and models techniques that demonstrate leadership in technology, information acquisition, and collaboration with the learning community; offers education, training and guidance to students and staff in the use of information technology resources.
- Stimulates students to be active and independent learners.
- Arranges for individual, small-group, and large-group activities as determined by student and curricular need.
- Develops and maintains a balanced collection of print, multimedia, and electronic resources based on curricular and user needs that reflects a diverse community, which includes keeping the catalog current and books shelved. Backs up the library collection whenever significant changes occur.
- Catalogs all campus print and media materials; inventories and distributes library equipment.
- Offers access to resources through informational subscription databases.
- Makes staff and students aware of reference services and new acquisitions.
- Submits library purchase orders, reports, and inventories within District time frames.
- Attends library meetings, workshops, and training sessions provided by the District for the professional development of the LMSISL.
- Supports District and campus initiatives and instructional programs, including Scope and Sequence for the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, Governor's Reading Initiative, Accelerated Reader, and Reading Renaissance.
- Supervises the Library Media Assistant(s) (Paraprofessional ill) in schools with assigned paraprofessionals.
- Supervises the training, scheduling, and activities of parent volunteers and student assistants in the library media center.
- Performs other professional duties as assigned by the principal.
