Film Editor/Instructor
Interlochen Center for the Arts seeks a dynamic film editor for the Film and New Media division who is eager to contribute to a vibrant program dedicated to the overall development of young visual storytellers as editor and educator. The ideal candidate will have a comprehensive knowledge of visual storytelling and its diverse history, drawn from professional experience as an editor/filmmaker and the pursuit of higher education and professional experience. The Film and New Media Division at Interlochen Center for the Arts consists of two tracks - Live Action Film, and Animation. This position will work primarily with the Live Action Film track, with some courses for film majors, and available to animators and non-majors as electives.This is a one (calendar) year, full time appointment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Serve as an/instructor and editor of a feature documentary project (in coordination with Interlochen Center for the Arts and the Greenacres Foundation) to create a documentary that will show how the results of scientific research and close observations of nature make new efforts in sustainability, regenerative agriculture and preservation, a clear and emotionally accessible story.
- Oversee the post-production details of the documentary, and coordinate necessary organizational aspects of planning the workflow of assets and the timely completion of cuts.
- Review and organize raw footage, implementing creative and narrative-driven editing techniques and integrating audio elements to enhance the story telling.
- Gather regular feedback to ensure all stages/deadlines of post-production are met.
- Teach a Post-Production/Editing course developed in conjunction with the Director of Film and New Media.
- Participate in 1:1 advisorship meetings with film students.
- Teach additional courses related to film/visual storytelling, film editing, post-production workflow, directing actors, critical studies & script analysis
- Participate as one of the faculty members of the Production Workshop, a class in which the entire community of film students enroll, in all stages of development of screenplays/productions/thesis/portfolio.
- Teach key aspects of editing technology from asset import to exports of final projects
- Provide group and individualized feedback for students
- Attend departmental meetings
- Attend weekly Community meetings as available
- Create appropriate curriculum
- Collaborate and innovate with other divisions at Academy
- Participate in other faculty requirements (e.g. advisory, committee work as appropriate, recruitment, screenings/guest series, film festival, Cinema Collective etc)
- Responsible for organizing day-to-day interactions with their respective students in the Film and New Media division, advising post-production.
- Help students become independent and capable community minded problem solvers within complex circumstances of filmmaking from script to screen.
Required Experience & Skills
- BA or BFA required, MA or MFA preferred
- Expertise in film editing with professional experience in a comprehensive variety of the following aspects of filmmaking: all stages of post, editing feature film, and non-fiction storytelling; communicating and collaborating with directors and key members of production; choosing selects meeting deadlines
- Experience and expertise with editing software, computer and storage technology, professional video formats (RED, Blackmagic, ARRI etc) and their interface with edit systems and their migration between field technology and edit suite
- Experience with sound mixers and mixing software, experience in motion graphics and color grading a plus
- Postproduction software certifications or professional experience equivalents; creative team scheduling and team management software.
