Intern, Business Operations

Who We Are 

BioMarin’s Technical Operations group is responsible for creating our drugs for use in clinical trials and for scaling production of those drugs for the commercial market. These engineers, technicians, scientists and support staff build and maintain BioMarin’s cutting-edge manufacturing processes and sites, provide quality assurance and quality control to ensure we meet regulatory standards, and procure the needed goods and services to support manufacturing and coordinating the worldwide movement of our drugs to patients.

SUMMARY:

The BioMarin Summer Internship Program will enable students to gain valuable experience and knowledge of the processes and systems within BioMarin, while gaining an insight into the pharmaceutical/biotech industry.

Novato Business Operations serves and enables the manufacturing, assessment, and release of drug therapies to the global BioMarin network. Our patients are the core purpose of our mission. Our team consists of Strategy, Project & Portfolio Management (PPM), Learning & Development, Continuous Improvement, Change Management, and Communications.

This position will be responsible for providing support to operational excellence projects and initiatives that are focused on process improvements, creating a culture of continuous improvement, and developing problem solving capabilities within the organization. 

JOB DESCRIPTION/PROJECT:

The primary responsibility of this role is to support the Lean deployment and projects and at the Novato site. A specific project will be selected for this role; however significant time and effort will also be dedicated to support and administration for other OE projects in the Lean realm, including Daily Management Systems, Visual Management, Diagnostics, Root Cause Analysis, and 5S. The projects will likely involve working with a cross functional team to implement element/s of Lean to improve day to day operations. 

  • Leading and assisting with the implementation and monitoring of improvement initiatives
  • Collecting and analyzing data from various sources to identify opportunities for improvement
  • Creating and updating process maps and flowcharts to document current and future state processes
  • Participating in brainstorming sessions and workshops to generate ideas and solutions
  • Preparing and presenting reports and findings to the operational excellence team and other stakeholders

Required Skills:

  • Superior customer service and interpersonal skills
  • A strong interest and curiosity in operational excellence and continuous improvement
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills

Desired Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint
  • Experience or knowledge in lean, six sigma, or agile methodologies is a plus
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment

Qualifications/Eligibility:

  • Undergraduate student a Bachelor’s Degree in a life science discipline.  
  • Student must be returning to school in the Fall Term OR has graduated within the 1 year of the start of the program.  
  • Must be available to work 40 hours a week
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship

In the U.S., the salary range for this position is $ 21.00 to $ 25.00 per hour, which factors in various geographic regions. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors.
