Engineer - Sustainability - Portland, ME

Our Sustainability & Resilience practice collaborates with clients and project partners to integrate successful solutions into the planning, design, construction and operation of buildings, reducing their environmental impact at every stage of their life cycle. We use whole-systems thinking and leading-edge analytical tools to develop innovative solutions that balance economic, social, and environmental factors. Our experienced team offers sustainable design strategies, energy analysis, green building certification consulting, sustainability analysis, and upgrades for existing structures, along with education and training.

 

The Role

You will work alongside a team of technically savvy professionals on net zero, and decarbonization projects as an Engineer in our Sustainability and Resilience practice. You will succeed if you are inquisitive, personable, and technically savvy. You will have opportunities for client interactions for professional growth while collaborating with colleagues to provide innovative sustainability and energy efficiency solutions.

 

Responsibilities

  • You will build conceptual and full-building energy models using Energy Plus, Honeybee / Open Studio for a wide variety of project types such as lab, educational, and many others.
  • Evaluate energy conservation measures including envelope and HVAC performance improvements.
  • Perform spreadsheet-based calculations of potential energy savings opportunities for projects at the planning stages and for policy development.
  • Communicate in graphic and written form the inputs, methodology, and key findings and recommendations for each analysis.
  • Participate with team members in sustainable design charrettes, workshops, and design competitions.
  • Review LEED credit documentation related to energy performance for compliance with standards.

 

Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering, Building Science, or Architecture
  • Experience with fundamentals of HVAC systems
  • Experience in energy analysis, modeling, and energy code compliance using Energy Plus, OpenStudio.
  • Knowledge and implementation of energy conservation measures in buildings.
  • Radiance, Ladybug and Python or other programming experience is a plus.
  • Some business travel may be required.
