HIV Alliance Marion County Education Outreach VISTA

The AmeriCorps member will work with HIV Alliance’s Education Program primarily across Marion County as well as other service counties such as Lane and Douglas. Duties include:

  1. Conduct outreach to educators serving Marion County, which has a large population of Latinx youth who are overrepresented in HIV and poverty statistics.
  2. Update educational materials and presentations to be in Spanish and culturally specific and responsive for Latinx communities of low socioeconomic status.
  3. Collaborate on grant writing, research, and reporting to help sustain and expand the Education program through grant fundraising.

AmeriCorps VISTA members serve Oregonians through indirect service and capacity building, meaning the work you will do is the behind-the-scenes work. While programs developed endure for years, you will have limited interaction with the community and will either serve remotely or in a professional office.

This position joins Oregon Health Authority’s statewide AmeriCorps VISTA team. In addition to activities at your individual site, each member receives additional orientation, training throughout the year, team meetings, and the support of the team leaders and project director based at the state public health agency. For more information about the Oregon Health Authority AmeriCorps VISTA Partnership Project, please visit: http://healthoregon.org/vista. Selections are made on a rolling basis and early applications are strongly encouraged. The last day to submit an application is Monday, February 26, 2024.

HIV Alliance’s Education Program provides culturally responsive, scientifically accurate, and nonjudgmental sexual health education for young people at risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The program reaches youth in Lane, Marion, and Douglas Counties and serves a diverse student population. The purpose of this program is to raise awareness of STIs and how they can be prevented in an effort to protect young people from acquiring STIs, reduce stigma, and reduce STI-related health disparities in Oregon.

Goals for the VISTA this year include: increasing outreach and engagement of youth in Marion County, and helping to update the Education Program’s presentations to be culturally relevant to Spanish speaking and Latinx youth to improve material relevance.

With the innovative public health work happening in Oregon, Salem is a wonderful place to explore a future in public health. You will gain experience collaborating with a range of staff working across different departments and engage directly with community partners in the state capital.

The OHA AmeriCorps VISTA Partnership Project is committed to building a diverse workforce to strengthen our work in Oregon communities. We value applicants who can bring lived experience to further OHA’s strategic goal to eliminate health inequities by 2030.
