Engineering Intern
Elmet Technologies (formerly H.C. Starck Solutions) is a leading producer of the high-performance metals including tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum and niobium.
We are currently recruiting candidates for Engineering Intern positions at our facility in Euclid, OH. Positions will support the development and enhancement of new products and advanced processes in tungsten and molybdenum metal manufacturing.
- The primary responsibilities of this position will be to do hands-on experimentation, characterization and documentation of processes that meet or exceed the requirements of current products including cost savings and quality.
- Work will be guided by staff engineers and technicians to solve processing and material problems as they arise. Required support projects may involve additive manufacturing, aerospace products, high-temperature applications and electronic materials.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES
- Using Metallurgical, Mechanical and Physical techniques for characterization.
- Establishing data collection and statistical analysis for evaluating/discriminating differences.
- Documentation of findings in both presentation and memo formats
- Ability to set up and run experimental tests, record observations or technical data
SKILLS and COMPETENCIES
- Inquisitive/curiosity about validity of measurements and details on observations.
- Communication and organization skills; competent using advanced Microsoft Office applications.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Student for Bachelor of Science Degree in engineering, physical or natural sciences.

Potential Intern Projects for 2024
- Support the development of higher purity Molybdenum for sputtering targets utilized in semiconductor applications. Support is needed in characterization, reporting and logistics. Intern will work with internal and external customers for establishing the optimum processing conditions and identifying root causes for contamination.
- Developmental support for additive manufacturing of refractory metals. An engineering intern will support the post-build processing and final inspection of 3D parts. Tasks include developing processes for heat treatment, baseplate removal, support removal, metallurgical analysis and determining baseline properties and process capabilities.
- Optimization of machining parameters for refractory metals. An engineering intern will support data collection and analysis of CNC machining parameters for improving speed, cost and/or tool life. Designed experiments will be used to test and determine the effects of multiple input variables.
- Support improvement in Hot Rolling and Powder Metallurgy processing of Molybdenum and Tungsten Heavy Alloy resulting in improved productivity and product consistency.
