Lifeguard - Spring/Summer 2024 - Work Study or Regular Pay

Title: Lifeguard - Warhawk Fitness & Aquatics

Department: Office of Recreational Sports and Facilities

Location: Williams Center Pool

Reports to: Jen Kaina, Assistant Director of Fitness & Aquatics

Compensation: $9.50/hour (academic year) $12 - $15 (summer)

Position Summary: 

This position will work closely with the Assistant Director of Fitness and Aquatics, and the student manager to enforce departmental policies and procedures for and around the aquatics area. This position will require a friendly and helpful demeanor, as well as flexibility in day-to-day tasks. This position also requires one to be presentable, professional, and to practice good leadership skills. Clear communication and availability to patrons and all staff is also a requirement for the position. Lifeguards are in charge of complying with any facility-related training following other annual contracts and obligations set forth by the Office of Recreational Sports and Facilities or the UW-Whitewater system itself.

Time Commitment Academic Year:

  • Work approximately 5 - 10 hours each week
  • Be available 20 hours each week (for scheduling purposes)
  • Attend and participate in monthly staff in-service training's

Time Commitment Summer:

  • Work 20 hours during the summer
  • Be available 30 hours each week (for scheduling purposes)
  • Attend and participate in monthly staff in-service training's

Responsibilities:

  • Provide customer service and a safe environment for all patrons
  • Aid the Assistant Director of Fitness & Aquatics and the Head Lifeguard with upkeep and organization of equipment within the aquatics facility including lane lines, water polo goals, and swimming/work out apparatus
  • Maintain daily records and reports including headcounts, maintenance reports, and accident reports
  • Enforce, abide, and defend rules in accordance with facility policies
  • Represent the department and program with professionalism and respect
  • Engage and support the overall aquatics program as a member of its staff
  • Respond to member and guest inquiries and concerns
  • Actively participate and practice practical skills during in-service training's

Minimum Qualifications and Conditions of Employment:

  • Current certifications: American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and Bloodborne pathogen training
  • Complete and pass a series of physical tests and practical in-water saves
  • We will consider non-UW-Whitewater students for summer positions
  • You will be required to provide proof of certification during an interview, if selected
