Junior Underwriter

Job Description
Position Purpose
The Junior Underwriter is responsible for supporting the Director of Underwriting during the underwriting and portfolio management process. The Junior Underwriter’s duties include investigating loan eligibility, preparing documentation for decisions on loans, explaining the reason for acceptance or denial, documenting supporting materials for approval, updating data, and creating reports relating to the loans. Junior Underwriter responsibilities include assisting in the underwriting process, reviewing and monitoring loans, underwriting conditions, and tracking needed information throughout the duration of the loan.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
 Gather and verify documents in loan files, such as credit reports, loan applications, title policies, appraisals, and financial statements are current and accurate.
 Serve as a liaison for the Director of Underwriting and mortgage loan team.
 Review all loan applications and disclosures for discrepancies and regulatory and compliance guidelines.
 Prioritize, track, and manage the loan underwriting process to meet deadlines and ensure timely submission to the underwriting team.
 Work with the Underwriting team to perform credit analysis and determine repayment probability using risk management matrices.
 Responsible for the sourcing of new borrowers.
 Create and maintain financial tools (spreadsheets) for analysis.
 Responsible for fielding calls regarding capital requests.
 Responsible for gathering the proper information tied to each deal and vetting out such information and communicating missing items to necessary parties.
 Conduct ongoing market research and industry analysis for trend spotting and new familiarity with all asset types.
 Responsible for sourcing new deals and cultivating borrower relationships.
 Responsible for ordering needed appraisals and other necessary third-party reports.
 Review all Title reports prior to closings to ensure there are no title issues.
 Ensure that information in file is a true and accurate depiction of borrower and property information.
 Meet targets for productivity, quality, and customer satisfaction.
 Assist in management of REO Assets.
 Handle confidential Borrower financial information, etc. with discretion and operate in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws while upholding fair lending practices.
 Accomplish all tasks as appropriately assigned or requested.


Qualifications
Experience, Competencies and Education
 Must have strong interpersonal skills, maturity and good judgment and be capable of communicating with a diverse range of individuals in a professional manner.

 Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information and exercise discretion.
 Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands with continual attention to the detail in all aspects of the job.
 Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel).
 Bachelor’s degree in real estate, finance, economics, or related field with previous underwriting experience.
 A mortgage brokerage license must be obtained during the first three months of employment.
 Strong understanding of real estate terminology, mortgage lending practices, mortgage loan requirements, financial analysis, and risk assessment.
 Knowledge and proficiency in all levels of mortgage underwriting.
 Knowledge of a variety of computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, database, and presentation software including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access).
