Residential Counselor

General Description

BHGH is is Residential Scholarship Program for motivated kids from some of Chicago's most underserved neighborhoods.  The Residential Counselor participates in all aspects of life in our homes:  cooking, homework, extracurriculars, driving, social-emotional growth, homekeeping, DCFS paperwork, and other inputs needed to create a warm, supportive, family-like atmosphere.   The kids attend locale college-prep schools and often need academic support to meet the standards in these schools.   You can live in the house RENT-FREE  in a private room on our staff floor.  Our homes are in a lovely neighborhood near Northwestern University.   The Residential Counselor is part of a team and works under a Residential Supervisor responsible for each  home.  You'll work relatively free from direct supervision but within the rules, mission, and leadership of our BHGH of Illinois affiliate.  

Major Responsibilities

Academics
a. Monitor and support academic performance of scholars.
b. Maintain regular contact with teachers and schools, including representation at teacher conferences and related activities.
c. Provides individual assistance and tutoring as needed.

 Household Management
a. Assure that home functions in accordance with Boys Hope Girls Hope program and local licensing standards.
b. Maintain the home in a clean and safe condition, providing for nutritional and physical needs of scholars.
c. Ensure that scheduled and necessary maintenance occurs on all program property and vehicles.

d. Perform tasks necessary to maintain a clean and safe environment, and for home to function including cooking, cleaning, shopping, and driving.

 

Critical Criteria

 

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • College degree required
  • Prior experience working with youth (12- 18 years of age) and/or be enrolled in a degree program in a related field
  • Posses a valid driver's license with a good driving record
