Founded in 1980, Neighborhood Self Help by Older Persons Project (SHOPP) is a non-profit social service agency located in the Bronx serving older adults and families caring for an ill, frail, or disabled loved one. SHOPP’s mission is based on the philosophy of self-help. We believe that older adults are capable of helping themselves and helping others improve their capacity to deal with the physical, emotional, social, and financial challenges they face as they age. SHOPP has several service programs in the Bronx, including the Community Care Network Program (CCNP); VIP Elder Abuse Program and Crime Victims Assistance Program; NY Connects of the Bronx; Case Management & Friendly Visiting Program; Caregivers Program, Lafayette Estates NORC Program; Older Adult Centers: Casa Boricua, Leon, Soundview, and Guess. The Neighborhood SHOPP Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) Program focuses on alleviating the effects of domestic violence and crime on older Bronx residents and helping to prevent victimization of the elderly. 

Job Description: 

With a Hybrid work schedule, the Elder Justice Intake Worker is specifically responsible for the following:

 • Determine preliminary eligibility and complete intake along with preliminary assessments on victims seeking information, support, and service on-site or off-site; 

• Provide information and referral to victims or professionals of other internal/external programs; 

• Assist social workers with follow-up calls for telephone reassurance;

 • Provide Program Director with completed intake and screening reports; 

• Maintain client case records, worker logs, performance target outcome tracking, statistical reports, and other administrative requirements; 

• Ahere to NYC Aging and other relevant government guidelines, regulations, procedures, and compliance expectations; 

• Assist with annual outreach plan while tracking referral log;

 • Identify and maintain collaborative relationships in the victim’s assistance network; • Attend periodic training and skill development workshops;

 • Participate in SHOPP staff training programs, staff meetings, Advisory Committee Meetings, Community Board meetings, and other meetings as assigned; 

• Involvement in a supervisory relationship with the PD and AD;

 • Perform other tasks as the Program Director or Chief Program Officer assigns.

 Qualifications

The position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or a relative field with at least 1-2 years of experience working with older adults or any vulnerable population. The position also requires the following skillset: critical thinking, empathy, good oral and written communication, conflict resolution, time management, public speaking, good interpersonal skills, team player, and computer and technology skills.
