Summary: This position will be responsible for maintaining public safety, enforcing laws, protecting the community, responding to criminal activities, and ensuring the well-being of individuals and property within the County jurisdiction. 

Essential Functions of the Job: The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. This classification is part of the broad-band compensation plan. All incumbents may not perform the duties listed, and levels may be assigned in accordance with the skills and proficiencies demonstrated by the incumbent.

· Enforces all applicable codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations (including traffic, criminal, and civil) to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security.

· Patrols designated areas Patrols designated areas.

· Respond to calls relayed by dispatchers.

· Prevents/discovers commission of a crime; issues citations; pursues fleeing suspects; apprehends, arrests, and processes criminals, fugitives, and offenders; conducts searches of suspects or arrestees.

· Conducts preliminary investigations of complaints or incidents, interviews victims and complainants, witnesses, and records statements.

· Performs rescue functions for accidents, emergencies, and disasters. Enforces vehicle operating laws, parking laws, and DUI laws; conducts field sobriety tests; uses visual observation and radar/laser speed detection units to enforce speed laws.

Qualifications:

 A high school diploma or GED certificate is required supplemented by one of the following:

• Three years of accountable work history

• Two years of military experience (requires honorable discharge) 

• Two year’s experience as a Police Officer in another jurisdiction

• Associate degree in criminal justice

• P.O.S.T. Pre-Service Graduate Certification

• P.O.S.T. Certified law enforcement officer in the State of Georgia

Special Requirements:

 In addition, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Be 21 years of age.

• Be a U.S. Citizen.

• Possess a valid state-issued driver’s license.

• Must become Georgia P.O.S.T. Certified within twelve months of employment if not certified when hired.

• Non-certified applicants must pass the Physical Agility Test prior to employment and within 30 days before attending the academy.

• Pass a Psychological examination.

• Pass a Pre-Employment Physical examination.

• Successfully complete the Departmental Field Training Program.

• Have no felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude or convictions of domestic violence or domestic violence-related offenses.

Salary: The salary range for a certified Police Officer is $53,56000. to $69,883.64 depending upon qualifications and certified years of experience. The starting salary for a non-certified Officer is $52,000.
